Re: Circular diatom
Hi. I removed the zoom from the video since it interfered with what seems to be some kind of internal contraction "12 o clock" of some sorts at around 9 seconds. Does anyone know what it is?

Re: Circular diatom
Nice, 75RR may be right: hard for me to guess at such magnification. If I may ask a question (not meant as criticism, but out of curiosity): why not a still image, since there is no movement? Thanks. Criticism is great. Look at the topic. It's probably an amoeba, not a diatom. I totally new at this...

Re: The microscopic investigation begains
In Norway, we have reports of dead microscopic crustaceans in our drinking water. No harm, but not something you really want to think hard about. When you start down this road, it's like the Matrix movie. Do you want to know what's really in your food and drink, or do you want to pretend, and be foo...

Circular diatom
Hi, In my pond water sample I have so far only found rectangular diatoms, no "live" round ones, until I saw this yesterday. Does anyone have any pointers on diatom anatomy? They are unicellular, and it could be interesting to know more about it's internal parts. 40x Objective. 10x eyepiece, afocal N...

Nice Jim,
Your slides are so "clean". How do you do it? Do you kidnap it and place it on a fresh slide?

Organisms in running water
I took a sample today from a stream to see what organisms that lurk in moving water compared to the still pond. I made sure grab substrate as well as water. The first sample is in. This looks like som kind Crustacean? I put the focus on a "vein" running from the tail and all the way up to the tail. ...

Second image is a filamentous alga. (thread like) By the way, your images would be a bit sharper if you magnified them a little less. 1024 pixels is the max permitted size on the longest border, I find 850 pixels wide is a convenient size, though the final size does depend on the original magnifica...

You might be on to something, I did not notice the gap between them at first. This is maybe 4 diatoms? I have seen them in another configuration as well in the same water samples; here is one from a slide yesterday. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/WZKDOr_oLwhm7Akp-1-ZPEhXEVYBNtYvQuebIiNuCF-m0YTHdk...

Pond creatures from the last couple of days
I just mad a quick video of some of the most interesting creatures I have found in pond water lately. I was not aware of the fruit/seed production when I looked at my sample. But it sounds reasonable one plant sam...

Nikon DS-5M microscope camera for sale. Old crap or a good start?
Local Nikon DS-5M for sale. 60USD. They're 10+ years I think? A quick google search turned up a result for a new price in 2004 of 5000 USD lol

I am very wary of old cameras, without a driver, you're stuck.

That's a significant improvement in sharpness. Try to count the vertical lines going through the specimen at 40x! ... And look at how defined he pearl structure is at 100x with the green filter! But... Wouldn't it be better to use a violet filter, meaning a green absorbing filter? Then you would get...

Thanks! Here is a documentation of the "processing stack". As you can see, my imaging chain is pretty dirty. Have do do spring cleaning :-) I find this image to be "over processed". Re: A very quick & easy water-mounted pollen stack
That's very nice! As I mentioned, I am new to this, and just wonder if there is a good reason to water mount the pollen. Would a "dry" mount work just as well? Just the pollen and a cover slip?
