Spoilt milk but no need to cry
Going to the fridge for some milk for my morning coffee I found the milk had turned to cottage cheese. The smell was horrendous. So, taking the opportunity for an interesting microscope experience I quickly took a mouthful of black coffee and a small sample of the milk. I expected to see lots of bac...

Moss and bacteria
A small sample of moss under the microscope with what I believe is lots of bacteria.I found the sample in the back yard, in a rather unpleasant pond of smelly water. I was hoping to find a tardigrade, instead I found a sample teeming with bacteria.

Yes, very complex and unique. I thing I can identify xylem cells but the rest is way beyond my knowledge. All I see is just how beautiful the natural world is. Another great post!

Oat water
I soaked porridge oats in water for two hours and then put the cloudy water under the microscope.
No matter how gentle I put the coverslip on, at a 45 degree angle, I can’t seem to eliminate air bubbles. Any advice would be very gratefully accepted.

Re: A New Mudpuddle
A little like me, I can maybe identify the famous ones like the mighty tardigrade and I think I’d probably know a stentor if I saw one. The rest are either little blobby things or tiny bling things!

Potato starch grains drying out without a coverslip
Potato starch grains/crystals seen using a 10x objective but no coverslip. I assume the motion is caused by the watery juice from the potato drying up.

Re: 60x 160 objective
PeteM, thank you for such a detailed reply. You gave me a lot to think about, I didn’t realise what I was doing. I think I will continue with my current 100x oil. I didn’t realise all the issues. So, thank you.

60x 160 objective
Hi, I’m looking to replace my 100x(oil) objective with a 60x dry objective. Does anyone know if ‘standard’ objectives fit a Swift SW380T microscope? I realise that changing just the one objective may mean it’s not of the same series, so I’d lose parfocality, I found a set of six objectives on the AM...

A single pollen grain in honey
I put a single drop of honey on a slide, hoping to see something interesting, a varroa mite of something. I found a single grain of pollen. I focused in relatively slowly and the effect, for some reason, made me very happy. Please tell me if I am posting too much, I’m new to microscopy and I just li...

It always amazes me seeing bacteria dance around like this. Seeing the microcosm like this is a privilege. I love the lighting you use.

Salt Crystals and Oblique Illumination and Dark Field Filters
Salt crystals under the microscope using a set of Oblique Illumination and Dark Field Filters bought from an online store. Some are very similar but others provide greatly different imaging experiences. This set of filters is great fun and very reasonably priced at $25US for about 30 various filters...

I didn’t know that, I assumed the baking process would kill the yeast culture. I will try that. I’ve seen starch grains from potatoes but didn’t consider this. Thank you!

Fly
I was inspired by Adi’s https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18913 focus stack image of a wasp to try it myself, I couldn’t find a wasp so I used a fly. I think I may need some more practice with the software but I’m still quite pleased with the results. I used a compou...

Bread maker’s yeast
We were making bread and I thought I take just a little of the yeast and activate it with a little warm water and sugar in a cup to look at under the microscope. It turns out yeast is quite beautiful and interesting. I put it up as a YouTube short, you can see sudden and rapid motion occasionally. I...

Question about an online UK retailer
Hi everyone, I’m looking at online retailers other than Amazon and came across this website: https://www.scientificlabs.co.uk/ and was wondering if anyone has any experience of them. I’ve had some bad experiences of buying from online companies in the past but this one looks like a reputable scienti...

Three week out of date coleslaw juice
I found a tub of coleslaw in the fridge, it was three weeks past its use by date. Instead of eating it I put some of the liquid in the tub under the microscope. Needless to say, I decided not to eat it. I’m not a bacteriologist but I think the movement seen here can’t be due to Brownian Motion or ca...

Sugar crystal melts
A sugar crystal melts. I was playing around with the condenser, its aperture and the blue filter that came with my microscope. The filter holder was half way in and out of the light field, giving what I hope is an attractive effect.

My first attempt at using my camera
I’m new to this wonderful hobby and spent some time getting my camera working right. I’ve got a couple of sets of prepared slides, one of which is from AM Scope. It’s a collection of 25 slides in the cutest little wooden box. I spent a great afternoon looking at the slides and taking photos of them,...
