It's good that there are some expert biologists on this forum....I am certainly not one!
The first part was taken using a Zeiss Neofluar 6.3/0.20, the DIC part was done with a Zeiss Plan-Neofluar 16/0.50 imm in water immersion.

Re: Same Spider:
The green and gold colours on the fangs are no doubt interference colours. They could be caused by the fangs being covered with a number of semi transparent layers less than one wavelength thick, or more likely by some kind of uneven surface, where some light is reflected out of phase with some more...

Video clip: the gut of a Nematode
A little clip showing the Peristaltic Contractions of the gut of a Nematode. I came across a wriggling mass of them in the bottom debris of my rain barrel. After lifting one out using one of my own hairs (glued to a wooden stick with a drop of mounting media) I first tried to pacify it with some dil...

Re: How not to do a focus stack!
barrel.jpg alysium seedpods.jpg I have done quite a bit of stacking, mostly with the stereomicroscope, the subjects either insects or small flowers. I tend to work with 15 - 25 images to stack. , taking several below and above the object. When viewing the individual images I delete the ones that ha...

my microscope collection
In my years working for Carl Zeiss, Wild-Leitz and later Leica I have come across a lot of redundant equipment languishing under benches. Often the owners were quite happy to give them away in return for some servicing of their current microscopes. I wasn't interested in anything other than Leitz, W...

stereomicroscope outfit for image stacking
A problem with taking pictures of 3-dimensional objects with the stereo microscope is often the lack of depth of focus. The structure and detail of the top surface is clear, but the overall shape is lost. I use the freeware CZM available through the microscopy.org.uk website to combine a series of i...

Hi from New Zealand
My name is Paul. Worked for Carl Zeiss NZ as a microscopy consultant and branch manager since 1978, with a 9 year stint in between as the same for Wild-Leitz (later Leica). As a result I have a nice collection of both antique (oldest 1855) and more current (1980's) microscopes. Mostly Zeiss, and som...
