Here are the pictures of the Diastar's electrical innards, details above each attached picture.

Francisco, my knowledge of electrical systems and my technical English are both limited  , so I am not certain as to what you call the primary & secondary here. I hope I got it right  ...

Re: Problem with AO / Reichert / Leica Diastar 100W illuminator

Yes, the first thing I checked before even plugging it in was that it was indeed a 240v model. I am in France and I'm always careful with US made hardware, I made the mistake once in the past, and learnt my lesson... ;) I have not tried bypassig the POT as it is not directly connected to the main po...

Problem with AO / Reichert / Leica Diastar 100W illuminator

Hello all, I just got hold of a very nice Reichert Diastar with trino head in excellent condition, for a good price (120€ shipped) and everything would be perfect if the built-in 100w illuminator was nice enough to provide some light :x . The control panel consistently displays a nice-looking but ra...

Re: Objective wanted

Hello Apo,

I have 2 45x, a Leitz (170mm) and a BBT-Krauss (presumably 160mm, I will check). I'm willing to part with both the Leitz and the set of 3 (9.5x, 45x, 100x oil) to which the BBT belongs.

Best,

Incident light DIC question

A DIC question to fully show my level of ignorance... I just missed a reasonably priced incident light BF/DF DIC nosepiece for my Orthoplan and I was considering experimenting with DIC on the Reichert Metavar or the Metapan (my "try everything & see what works" scopes) before investing in Orthoplan ...

Re: A stroke of amazing luck - another new part for the Orthoplan!

Hi John, For some reason the pics of the new nosepiece don't show on my side of the Channel. Considering that I am currently in the process of completing an Orthoplan for selling and bringing mine up to my working requirements, I find your constant bragging about cheap and excellent Orthoplan parts ...

Depending on the exact % of import taxes to Sweden, shipping seems to be around $90 to most European countries, import taxes included... Try replacing the ".com" by ".fr", ".co.uk" and ".de" in the address and you'll get a reasonably accurate estimate of shipping costs & import duties to Europe, unl...

Re: Can anyone ID this darkfield condenser please?

Hi John,

this is more likely to be a phase condenser. The finish is somewhat reminiscent of some Gillett & Sibert products but their phase condensers were of the turret type AFAIK, not slider type so I'm at a loss here...

Re: Using biological microscope for metals without additional light source

Congratulations on re-inventing the Descartes-Lieberkühn reflector, in a much simpler and very cost-effective version ! This "ping-pong ball illuminator" is a well known technique for high-magnification macrophotography, and yours is an interesting transposition to microscopy. The result is very sim...

Talking about close-ups, I am wondering what is best for small subjects like tiny ants/gnats etc, would I be better of with a stereo scope or a metallurgical compounds scope? I am asking because I have seen some really great work done on similar subjects using a metallurgical scope. I would also ha...

For what it's worth, I've successfully separated separated partly delaminated optics by soaking them in sizzling water for an hour or so, without any damage to coatings. The optical cement was Canada balsam.

Not sure about what it would do to the filter but it may be worth a try...

Re: Need help to identify my Leitz Miicroscope

Right ! so it seems that Leitz introduced 2 new stand designs between 1909 and 1913 and altered the designations accordingly, downgrading their former top stand from "A" to "C" ... quite like me in my 30s and now 20 years later...

Sorry for the bad info

Re: Need help to identify my Leitz Miicroscope

According to the 1913 Leitz catalogue both the "AA" & "A" stands have a different footing, and the "B" is also something else. The footing of yours fits stands "C" & "D", and only the "C" has the carrier for a rotative stage. The site Charles mentioned shows a 1923 "CM" that is almost identical to y...

Vickers infinity objectives tubelength & correction question

Hello all, I recently noticed that Vickers had sold a line of infinity corrected objectives, although I don't know for which scope. So far I have seen 3.5x, 10x, 50x & 140x in the old "chrome with broad color ring" style, and 3.5x, 7x, 20x, 70x & 140x in a much more modern "black & knurled chrome" s...

Re: My new Orthoplan's objectives - quite a mixture...

Many thanks Yann, I'm pursuing all the above-mentioned possibilities right now - oh - would a 0.9 top-lens need the K4 to work on the Orthoplan - or if I fitted a 0.9 top-lens to my condenser (which has no auxiliary lens at all) until I found a K4, would this work? From my understanding, all tops f...

As I move up the magnification I'm not really able to see the edges of the field diaphragm as I close it down and am unable to get the edges of it focused with vertical movement of the condenser. Also it seems that the model 603 condenser may be unable to fill FOV for anything lower really than the...

Re: My new Orthoplan's objectives - quite a mixture...

Nice set of objectives. The 54x & 63x are the "weak links" here, as they are not of the "Plano" line and thus will not have the same edge performance as the others. Still, the 63x being a dry objective you may find it quite useful. All but the 50x water & 100x oil are fluorite, a definite plus IMHO....

The thing is, sanitation and hygiene have little effect on these populations of organisms. Would it be totally ridiculous to assume that : 190TL, 210TL and 250TL lenses are actually exactly the same lenses and that the necessary compensations are performed via the illuminator's optical system ? Owners of Reichert finite epi systems should not bother with TL and simply grab ANY lowest / l...

Yan E., I have two LOMO 70x NA 1.23. They would produce image as "dippers", but they do much better with the correct 0.17 mm cover. My experience is that dipping with the wrong cover correction at NA 1.1 or over wouldn't make the best possible image. It is OK with NA 0.9 and and lower (yes, 40x NA ...
