Re: Leitz Orthoplan focus block disassembly docuemtation

Kirby: The issue was misalignment of the oculars. Gregg on the io group pointed out that the 4 screws holding the ocular tube could be loosened to attain coincident image. DId that and the image coincided He also brought up a good way for focus block alignment using a 4x objective. bring objective ...

Re: Interesting Slide!

One way or another let us know what you see! V Please light up a LED tiny torch and see how this prepared slide internally reflects the illumination, see if like a boat-deck light guide, or like my outdoor clip board, see if the specimen offers enhanced contrast due the glow of this wedge-slide. Re: Interesting Slide!

I think the taper of the slide is entirely intentional. The kidney specimen is infected with lupus. How much did they know about lupus in 1922? Might the taper have been there to track to flow of liquid through the specimen as they struggled to better understand the affects of disease regarding org...

Re: Interesting Slide!

Element56, Found the discussion quite interesting. Have you tried putting the slide between two polarizers to see if it is a wave/retarder plate? Back in the late 1800's Jacques Babinet was already using compensators. Here is Wikipedia's entry, paragraph 3 discusses his wedges of quartz. Just wonde...

Re: Leitz Orthoplan focus block disassembly docuemtation

Followed the "eyeball it" strategy on aligning the focus block. maintained shim location and used the field iris stopped down to confirm alignment, Have been able to take images in brightfield, phase contrast, dark field Not bad for parts Leitz... Last item to address is Trinocular alignment due to...

Re: AO Model? I forget which one it s but it's for sale

The commercial product you are using is a combination of a solvent and a buffing agent (abrasive). I use a solvent sparingly when needed, and use a light touch. Of course soap and water is my first choice. The context of my comment was when one is using a solvent anyway, either explicitly (isopropy...

Re: AO Model? I forget which one it s but it's for sale

Solvents are over used and misused all the time which is why I rarely if ever advocate their use. For general cleaning I always recommend Dawn dish soap. Waxing after cleaning is simple, fast, safe and effective so I would not see any reason to do otherwise. Disinfection as was spoken of earlier is ...

Re: AO Model? I forget which one it s but it's for sale

Thanks Kirby, I may try one of those on the Dynoptic. The paint is not bad overall but has sort of a dry, powdery look after cleaning, and was probably not help by wiping with IPA to disinfect. You have to be really carful with alcohol and some of the other disinfectants. The finish is usually pret...

Re: AO Model? I forget which one it s but it's for sale

According to a catalog I have seen, the Series 1, and also the Series E1, had only the horseshoe base. The Series 2 and 4, according to that catalog, differed only in the choice of the base--horseshoe or built-in illuminator. That catalog does not have the base shown here at all, but you do see the...

Re: AO Model? I forget which one it s but it's for sale

Cosmetically the paint is good but needs waxed. What do you use and what is your process for waxing old microscopes? Same as waxing anything else? I don't really know anything about paint or waxing in general. It's just like waxing a car but obviously you need to be more carful around optics and ot...

Re: AO Model? I forget which one it s but it's for sale

Update, I worked on the fine focus, interpapillary and condenser and got everything working really good. I do not have a mechanical stage that can be "thrown" on but I do have one that could be added. However, it would require some drilling and threading. If the buyers capable I will throw it in. Pr...

Re: Leitz Orthoplan focus block disassembly docuemtation

Fred, I don't know if the heat really did much but it's definitely not the first thing I would try. My experience with applying heat to sized parts always involved a lot more heat on a less sensitive subject. In the case with an Orthoplan or Diavert I would probably always just go straight to disass...

Fred, Your story scared me when you said you heard a cracking noise. There's a plastic gear in those but it sounds like it's okay if you have it working. No you didn't buy a boat anchor. What you have is the norm for that and many other vintage instruments especially in that price range. CRC contact...

AO Model? I forget which one it s but it's for sale

Is it a model 2? I can't remember. Anyway I need to lighten my load so I'm going to list a few instruments that I'll never get to. This one is straight from the lab I never touched it other than whipping it down and putting a drop of oil here and there. Optically it's excellent and needs nothing. Ev...

Re: Brass Rack and pinions designed to run dry?

Typically a rack and pinion is located in close proximity to a sliding dovetail. For the dovetails, I typically use a a very light coat of Nyogel 774 VL, which is the lightest in the series of nyogel 774s. https://scontent.fyvr1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/118784231_10157644493701732_55921885995032573...

I run two dehumidifiers and no longer have any humidity issues. Once you get the dehumidifier down ther...

I need to stop messing with it because every time I do I think about keeping it. If someone here doesn't take it , it's possible it will never make it to eBay

That would have been a nice Christmas present for someone, Kirby. Can't remember if I recommended a method . Wattle and daub was it? Re: Finally found a working 47.5 B&L Apo what a fine lens

Kind of paints a bad picture of the old B & Ls. but it is unfair. So, I have been at this a while. 25 years ago, most of the objectives that came up for sale were good. I think I went through six or seven 45 and 47.5X B & L apochromats with maybe one dud amongst them. Same with 90X and the 20s. The...

Does anyone know for sure if A.O. used epoxy to cement these prisms? Been a while since I reglued some, but my recollection is that the existing cement was originally somewhat flexible? The epoxy I use (West Systems G-Flex) is flexible, made for dissimilar materials and according to the manufacture...
