Comparing the Zeiss MF Projektiv 4:1 to other eyepieces

In an attempt to create a Raman microscope spectrometer (or to add Raman spectroscopy to my PMIII) microscope, I have been putting a lot of effort into evaluating eyepiece/objective combinations to better understand the compensation or correcting values. I have posted some of this work in the past t...

Re: Adding laser to Zeiss Photomic III for Raman

I've continued to work on this project and wanted to post an update. After much experimenting I came to the conclusion that the problem was alignment, although I could not rule out issues with the microscope optics. I took a side tangent and spent a number of months aligning the PMIII, testing vario...

Re: Comparing Zeiss PMIII internal camera to a Canon AE-1 and Sony a6000

Thank you MicroBob, I was very curious about the hue differences on the actual photos versus Sony. I was curious how the printing process now works particularly how you also received a CD with the photos. Your explanation answers many of my questions. I did go back and scan the photos that came with...

Re: Understanding the capabilities of microscope cameras

I use a Sony a6000 with a Canon Photomicro Unit F microscope system and a e-mount to FD adapter. Sony has a mini HDMI out that make is super simple to connect to a monitor. In addition, the view is "live" so that what you see is what you get. I have been very please with the setup.

Comparing Zeiss PMIII internal camera to a Canon AE-1 and Sony a6000

In recent attempts to achieve theoretical resolution on the microscope, all aspects of the microscope subsystems are being tested and optimized. This optimization has also included the best possible camera setup to image what is seen in the binoc eyepiece. It was of interest to compare the acquisiti...

Re: Diatom pictures today - trying to improve res by enhancement techniques 1of2

Thanks for the responses. I was using a s second delay with a wireless remote on the camera. I'm not getting the resolution I think I should, but not sure why. These were all focal using a Canon Micro F connection system. I'm waiting on a 35mm lens that should arrive this week. I'll try the afocal m...

Actual pictures are much better resolved than what is posted due to reduced image resolution.

Diatom pictures today - trying to improve res by enhancement techniques 1of2

I have been trying to learn the true improvements that are gained by neofluar and apochromat objectives and corrected eyepieces. Yesterday great suggestions from the "microscope and optics" section of the forum led to some great reading and more pictures this afternoon of Kemp's Diatom 8 test plate,...

Thanks to all - I appreciate the comments. Given the suggestions and readings, I worked a little with enhancement techniques I had lying around. Posted photos in the specimen section of the forum.

Thanks again for all the very good information!

Re: More questions about objectives "types"

Very interesting idea with the histogram - well worth a try. I recently read an old article (can't find it in my computer mess right now) about how you could evaluate the correction of an objective by looking at a conoscopic diffraction image of an objective focused on a stage micrometer. After read...

Re: Question about Zeiss Correcting Oculars

Thanks for your responses! Camera setup was afocal using a Sony a6000 with Canon FD converter and attached to a Canon Photomicro Unit F adapter. I was using a Zeiss KPL 10W eyepiece in the camera adapter which only views about 40% of what is seen in the eyepiece. I posted a picture of the setup shwo...

More questions about objectives "types"

As noted in the update comment in my earlier post titled "Questions about Zeiss Correcting Oculars", I am ultimately interested in learning of the best camera setup for the Zeiss Photomic. This has led me to an investigation in eyepiece/objective paring and several focal and afocal camera setups, an...

Re: Question about Zeiss Correcting Oculars

Apologies to keep bugging everyone with this, but I wasn't satisfied with my last posting. I knew that my PM was not optimally aligned and I was confident that there were artifacts in the images due to alignment. So, I followed Paul James method of aligning the PM Headrig (Mic-UK) and performed a th...

Thanks to everyone again who replied. I used the information given and ran tests on all the 40X objectives and eyepieces that I had available. Summary results first and then details to follow. Obviously, the best combination was the Zeiss KPL and Neofluar objective, followed by the Zeiss CPL and sam...

Re: Question about Zeiss Correcting Oculars

Thank you all for the replies, exactly what I was needing to know. Objectives of higher correction should, if possible, alway...

Re: Hoffman modulation contrast?

I purchased a used HM 40X objective and condenser many years ago and rather like the contrast enhancement that I can get. Thank you very much for your insight and feedback. I am eager to hear your results on your CREE LEDs. I also...

For an amateur forum like this one, I would suggest adding a few summary lines, in addition to that long article. Your high power LEDs seem to have pretty good green output. What are their CRI values? Thank you for the feedback. Definitely agree, I should have included a summary - will make that a ...

Characterization of LED and Halogen sources for a Zeiss Photomic retrofit

I have read a lot about LED retrofits for microscopes but have been very skeptical of power and color quality. I finally bit the bullet and did the work to see how some direct-replacement LEDs compared to the original halogen source in my photomic. What has been missing in much of the reports is spe...

Adding laser to Zeiss Photomic III for Raman

I have added a green laser to my Zeiss photomic III to create a Raman microscope. I am finding alignment super critical. I have seen the article on aligning the photomic (head, nosepiece, field diaphragm, etc.), but I don't think I have it as good as it needs to be. Does anyone have knowledge of how...
