Re: Comparison of TWX-1 Folded Optics Microscopes from Different Production Years

Thank you, this is probably the best throughout review of the TWX-1 out there. I personally own one, but enjoyed comparing it to yours from different manufacturing dates.

I see, thank you. That method is interesting. Would you suggest using the laser despeckled? or is the beam sufficient as it is?

I have a C-Apo UV-VIS-IR 40x NA1.20 W Korr. in the older RMS mount if you might be interested. What do you mean by green laser projection?

Re: where is the image plane of Nikon cf pl 4x

It's 202.5mm from the lower shoulder of the CF PL lens. Strangely I've never seen this in any Nikon documentation I have. The value is from measuring the photography adapter tubes from Nikon.

I got mine for about 10 bucks. It's completely void of any markings, so it sometimes comes by as a mystery "adapter". I've seen some planted on a random turret too.

Re: Did Nikon make an adapter to use finite plan apos on Eclipse?

Here's the "thing". It has optics inside for infinity correction. It works for anything TL160. It's CF, so it pretty much passes along whatever CA the lens has. Image quality is OK, it won't work with confocal setups so you wouldn't be concerned with it anyway. I hear it was for the users of the NCF...

Re: For sale : NIKON PlanApo 20x, 40x, 100x

Those NCF Planapos are quite good objectives, even by current standards given that they aren't damaged. Surface scratches are one thing to look for, but with high NA objectives a sharp ding is enough to shift the elements inside. That will show as all sorts of aberrations, most people will mention i...

If I were you, I would saying " where did you buy it? or Is there any other dent in the 20x or other l...

Re: For sale : NIKON PlanApo 20x, 40x, 100x

NOTICE: Those particular planapos (all three) came up on a Japanese auction site first in early August. The first buyer refused reciept, and the seller relisted it and succeeded in selling them later the same month. All three have serious dents, and will not focus properly. The PA20x is dented so ba...

Re: Optiphot head banger

That nosepiece isn't intended for the finite Optiphot series. Rather it's for the infinite semiconductor inspection Optiphot 100 series and above. The dovetail will fit, but the dovetail-RMS mount distance is too far, and will deviate from TL160mm.

Re: Nikon Interference Phase Contrast (IPC)

I have a type 3 bought in 1964 in Yokohama by a USN medical officer (useless as faded and crystallised, and I do mean the phase plates, not the USN medical officer) with "?" slider positions as type 4, and also a type 5 with no such problems. Maybe they changed the construction of the actual phase ...

Re: Nikon Interference Phase Contrast (IPC)

My guess is that it took Nikon that long to sell built inventories, Could be. But another factor to consider, is they had at least 3 distinct generations of the attachment. Which would suggest constant development/improvement over the years. I stated 1976 as a probable end of sale date, since they ...

Re: Nikon Interference Phase Contrast (IPC)

The IPC was an expensive add-on which sold poorly in its day. I suspect nobody actually understood what they could do with it. Maybe it's the same story as the Zeiss Jamin-Lebedeff sets or the Zeiss Axiomat; ferociously expensive, superbly engineered, costing more to make than the sale price, they ...

Jeez, you're right. I see no paint there! I assumed it was the same with the CF PlanApo 40x, which has a painted over frosted donut much alike your objective. And that paint rubs/flakes off over time. Thanks for the input! I can only guess it's a cost cutting move. It's for the entry market afterall...

Re: Intriguing objective design (Nikon CF 40x achro)

Nice observation. That 40x objective at NA0.65 wouldn't require a embedded first element as used in high NA objectives (i.e. NA1.40), so it is made to be concave at the first surface and isn't missing anything. The surrounding donut of frosted glass should have been initially blacked out with a thic...

Re: How parfocal should things be? (Nikon finite phase)

That 40x LWD is equipped with a coverglass correction collar that allows for a 0-2mm adjustment. Changing that correction effectively changes the focal length of the objective slightly. So, it will be parfocal at a certain correction value, but not at every value with this objective and others. Chee...

Re: WTB/ barrow 30mm Centering telescope lens

One way to do it without a centering telescope, is to remove one eyepiece and look down the tube. You'll see the phase annulus of the condenser and the phase plate of the objective. Another quick way is to use a 10x loupe to magnify the aerial image of the annulus and phase plate above the eyepoint ...

Re: Nikon Interference Phase Contrast (IPC)

I sometimes am perplexed why people go after the IPC attachment so hard. It isn’t a true interference method as the name implies, it’s only a fancy phase setup, and due to the wider phase annuli it isn’t nice as the normal phase kit anyway. It’s for people who need it for it’s variable phase capabil...

Re: Need a way to secure Camera to E600 Microscope

I assume you're using a Y-TF trinoc there. That 0.5x projection lens probably has a diameter of 23.3mm on the lower part, which is compatible with the projection lenses that Nikon usually offer. You need the straight tube as in the image below. Without it, the projection lens won't capture the inter...

Why not use a 4f relay to externalize the objective BFP? It should be much easier to introduce fourier filtering elements in the intermediate plane there.

Re: Nikon Optiphot with DIC

Thanks for getting the additional shots! Yes, that definitely would be DIC. The Biophot DIC kit allows for 20, 40,100x DIC so getting 100x working would only be a matter of finding a CF Plan 100x NA1.25. That prism placement points to the system to being a de-Senarmont type compensator DIC as you've...

Yup, I remember seeing this beast some time ago. Viktor's excerpt explains the components, but what eluded me at the time, is "where would the nosepiece Nomarski prism be?" It seems likely you've got it working as a pol scope, but not so sure about it being DIC.
