Re: Zeiss Jena LG

Hi Nance, I think the LU looked very similar but was bigger and heavier. It was the reserch model of the time with interchangeable table and condensor block. The LG is vey common, the LU not. The LG was a sensation when it appeared on the market on 1934. The usual high quality microscope of the time...

Re: a newbie with a pre-wwII Zeiss Jena LU

I'm not shure whether this is a LU or LG. I only know the LG and it is a really nice microscope to use today. The ergonomics are good and the craftmanship is second to none. Nowadays you would be fired immediately when you spent time on designing an instrument with this amount of precision engineeri...

Re: Question about Zeiss Correcting Oculars

Newer eyepieces often offer a more comfortable view compared to older ones. So you might end up using an eypiece that doesn't fit perfectly from the chromatic correction but offers the most agreeable view nontheless. It's good to know and apply the theory and then just use what is good in practice. ...

I forgot two things:
object micrometer is perfect as a test target - use it with cover slip.
For old "keyhole" eyepieces a smartphone can be the perfect fit optically.

Re: Is a Zeiss C8x eyepiece useful for afocal or focal photomicrography?

The "C" eyepieces are compensating non planar eyepieces with small field of view and little eye relief. They can also be used for strong objectives as all Zeiss Standard objectives are calculated for the same compensating factor. This was a big invention at the time. They don't make use of your Plan...

Re: Question about Zeiss Correcting Oculars

The KPL were the best corrected eyepieces. The CPL are "clinical plan" = good enough for eveyday routine use. The "C" type is the simplest. It also compensates for the objectives chromatic error but is not planar and has a small field of view. The CPL introduce a heavy field curvature that is somewh...

Here you've got a (german) description of how to make a stained blood smear slide: http://www.mikrohamburg.de/Programm/Protokoll_20161119.pdf This procedure works very well. The slide has to be especially clean. Try to find an image that shows the right handling of the second slide to draw out the b...

It is possible to turn the binocular head around so the power cable faces away from you. Most people use their mircroscopes this way round.
Do you already have an idea what to look at?

For many it is the wrong language but this is a recent and highly respected book on wood sectioning:

It is not too expensive and the methods do work.

Hi John, how is your base sledge microtome doing? I'm asking because a Leitz 1300 base sledge microtom waits to be picked up by me. I wasn't looking for one but was offered it for a good price, found a remaining space for it in my room and said "Yes". It looks whether I will be able to pick it up in...

LOMO M211 1990s small rearch microscope - customized version

Hi together, a while ago I bought this rare LOMO microscope. I got it as a by-catch with a rare Zeiss Jena Photo head (the one to fit a binocular head plus photo tube). It obviously has been customized to someones needs with binocular tube and photo head from Zeiss Jena, Zeiss West KPL eyepieces, a ...

I think you will get a DIY solution running quicker and cheaper than a commercially made chamber, ev...

These instruments are in a really nice condition from what I can see on the photos. If they were mine I would be very careful with restoration work not to damage the old surfaces. Re: A commercial or DIY smoke cell for microscopy?

I have a lightweight microtome from Japan that is made by a japanese school supplier, Uchida. There are probably comparable companies in most bigger countries....

It would be interesting to know wether this also applies to camera and microscope lenses. With very old cameras (~100 years) I had the impression that the surface of the lenses had suffered in a similar way.

For example it makes a difference when you move the clean coverslip through an alcohol flame, but this effect lasts only so long. Glass is also ...

Re: A new (?) home-made mounting medium for diatoms

The diatom looks a bit smashed. Maybe you could reduce the pressure on the slide a bit. When you make your slide upside down the distance between cover slip and slide in not so important any more. The diatoms are always where you want them, regardless of how much mountant is below. Your fixture is n...

Re: Where to buy affordable #1.5 coverslips?

No. 1 is 0,13 - 0,16 mm thickness (Marienfeld) Normally there is in addition water or mountant between object ond cover slip so this thickness should be just fine. My experience with cheap round cover slips from ebay was that they were up to 0,25mm thick, so completely useless. Then I bought quality...

If you are more interested in your slides than in the instrument a newer model is probably very good. If you enjoy fine workmanship and...

For disassembly you probably have to remove two screws to get a little plate on top of the focussing mechanism out of the way. You then should be able to see how the mechanism gets apart. For initial degumming it is advisable to remove all optical parts before the use of penetrating oil. Gentle appl...
