Re: 6 cent coverslips vs 24 cent coverslips
0,06$ means a pack of 100 is already at 6$. This is a not cheap for basic coverslips. Maybe you can find a different supplier with better prices and selection. Zeiss offers square cover slips of tight tolerance with a thickness of 0,17 +/- 0,005mm. As mentioned above these will only improve image qu...

Hi Tony, here you can find a document on paraffin embedding and sectioning worms (in German): http://www.mikrohamburg.de/Tips/Paraffinschnitte_03.pdf For paraffin infiltration of plant material I use round about this method with isopropanol as intermedium and like the results: http://www.klaus-henke...

Re: On holiday at at St.Lawrence River, microscope info requested
I wrote a bit about the separation of Zeiss after WW2: https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?p=110505#p110505 In this situation it must have been quite dramatic to realize that they had developed the W model and it wouldn't fit the market. Maybe they were able to get a much be...

Re: On holiday at at St.Lawrence River, microscope info requested
Actually the KF and the GFL are not as similar as their look would suggest. On the KF coarse and fine focus are connected and move the stage, a quit emodern solution. On the GFL they are independent and the coarse focus moves the arm of the microscope, a more traditional setup. Both are very beautif...

The Phomi and Universal are a bit unwieldy but actually they take up just one microscope desk place. Only when one tries to lift them and put them elsewhere the wheight and bulk really shows. They don't go for much money and are comfortable and quick to use and top quality. And advanced options are ...

Here is a recent collection of microscopy material sources, mostly in Germany, it is no problem to get round cover slips: http://www.mikrohamburg.de/Linklisten/Linklisten%202021.pdf With round chinese cover slips I have made the experience that their thickness varied a lot, up to 0,25mm, and they we...

The recipe I posted contains the least possible amount of solvent. It is on the border of being too stiff at room temperature. The advantage is that not much shrinkage occurs.

Re: I hate bubbles.
The amount of trouble with bubbles depends on what you do with the mountant, like shaking, carrying it. And it depends on the mountant itself, some hame much more problems with bubbles than others. For plant stem sections Euparal works fine and has little problems with bubbles. What do you do with y...

What you want is a lens that offers a light cone with a wide included angle, a lens of e.g. 20-35mm and quite fat in the middle with a short focal lenght.

Re: Improving a toy microscope..add a condenser?
I once had a microscope that has cost 40€ new with quite acceptable objectives 4:1, 10:1 and 40:1. It was mainly let down by the very low numeric aperture of the illumination. I installed a small camera objective below the stage, oriented so the front lens faces the light source. This improved image...

The EM-1 is advertised over a Kickstarter crowd funding scheme - not very convincing when it is already developed and in production. At least one of the application photos was reused from the Newton homepage with just a little editing of the photo. I always found the Newton nm-1 interesting but it's...

Re: Help with decision on Leitz Orthoplan
The main problem with transmitted light fluorescence, which made it outdated long ago, is that it is extremely wasteful of illumination. Fluorescence requires both intense illumination for excitation AND efficient removal of that exciting light such that the fluorescence sensor (eye, camera, whatev...

As long as you use 170mm eyepieces on your 170mm microscope, both 160mm and 170mm objectives will work ok, as the location of the image only differs by 2mm, as seen here: https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?p=77060#p77060 I really like the 170mm Pl Fl objectives I've tried,...

Congratulations, you've got a very nice microscope there! The Orthoplan arrived on the market in the 1960s and this was still Leitz 170mm era. They were changed to 160mm later. So when looking for parts it will be important to know which components are compatible. I posted a link to the german forum...

Hi Keith, a good and very short objective that fits well to your Zeiss West Standard would be the Leitz EF 4. It is shorter than the Zeiss Plan 2,5. You might already be aware of this but there were two Zeiss companies between 1945 and 1990: Zeiss Jena and Zeiss West (Oberkochen and Göttingen). Ther...

Re: Dammar / Damar resin as slide mountant - how to prepare it
Since Dammar doesn't dissolve well in alcohols I don't think it is likely that it will fully tolerate alcohol when dissolved in turpentine. In my eyes Dammar is similar in use to canadabalsam, intermedium xylene, not tolerant of water. Compared with canadabalsam I would say it is a bit less variable...

Dammar / Damar resin as slide mountant - how to prepare it
Hi together, quite often the topic arises of which mountants to use and where to get them. Often stuff like nail polish (where does this idea come from? ) is tried, discovered as not very usable and abandoned. In some countries a variety of proven mountants is available but this is by far not...

Re: A pocket camera adaptor
In my experience the lenses of these cameras show defects when used on the microscope that doesn't show in normal photography. This limits the acheivable image quality. This effect comes from the way the plastic lenses are made and from dirt inside the objectives. The problem mostly shows in stronge...

To compensate for the yellowish light you would need a blue filter.
These original transformers are durable but quite impactical in use. There are ready made LED conversions and it is not that difficult to build one yourself.

Re: Carl Zeiss Standard 14 advice
Basic Zeiss West optics don't tend to delaminate much, it is more the better corrected objectives that have this problem. On the other hand side for most other systems there never was a Planapo 63 /1,4.. Leitz earlier used 37mm objectives, then 45mm objectives. The 45mm objectives 170 and 160mm can ...
