Re: Amoeba eat algae
A great capture, Francisco! It's the kind of scene that one could do microscopy for years and never see. Thanks for sharing.

Incredible video, Francisco! Which of the two "necks" shown in the thumbnail do you think became the neck at the end of the video? From my watching of the video, it seemed that the originally shorter neck developed into the final neck but I'm not sure.

Re: Another amoeba video
Nice video, Radazz. It looks like a monopodial Amoeba, but don't quote me. I made a video of what I think was a monopodial a while back and just titled the video "Amoeba," playing it safe. Under the YouTube video I put, "Some kind of monopodial Amoeba?" Really playing it safe there! :D Here's my vid...

Re: Carchesium - a colonial peritrich
Interesting video! Fascinating to see how they retract as a group. Makes me wonder how they communicate with each other? Maybe just reacts to the neighbor moving? Thanks, hvk! I have read that each cell can contract its stalk individually. It may be that whatever causes one to contract is likely to...

Re: Carchesium - a colonial peritrich
Very good video. Very good phase contrast Thanks, Francisco. Actually, I no longer have the objectives that were used for that video. I sold just about all my good stuff last June when I thought I was through with the microscopy hobby. Mr. Porter, I gotta say you have made me feel much better about...

Thanks, Bruce! I didn't notice that the stalk contracted in a zig-zag manner rather than spirally. (Not that I would have recognized it as Haplocaulus even if I had noticed. )Bruce Taylor wrote:Fun. I might have described the little guy as "Haplocaulus-like", though.

Very nice images, Seb! You have really mastered the technique you are using for these. I agree with JimT in picking #3 as my favorite.

Re: Hi Guys!
Hi Guys. New to the forum and have a little experience with microscopes. One thing I am curious to know is how to find particular samples? Can you follow a precise method like when looking for tardigrades in soaked moss or does luck come into play when searching for things like Protists? An example...

Re: What was the ciliate that ate a stentor?
Outstanding! You have captured some HUGE meals in your videos and this is one of the best. I don't think I've ever seen the ciliate that did the eating. Was your sample from a local pond? Thank you! This sample is from the pond of the newly opened park in the center of Moscow just near the Red Squa...
