Re: Frustulia Filter Faceoff Fun

Interesting experiment Rod! Looks like color filters can be a useful tool to bring out the most detail in a subject. I agree the AO filter seems best with the Lee a close second. I am not surprised there was a difference in illumination levels, not all filers are created equal. Depending on the mete...

Re: Stomata Comparisons

Had a quick look, nothing locally, shipping from the USA around $400, same microtome shipped via Fedex only $155 from India. $155 is not too bad I suppose.

I need to investigate. I do have a fiend who owns a Pathology lab, think I will give him a call first.

Re: Stomata Comparisons

Nice comparison. Do you have any images at less magnification that show the structure around the stomata? That seems to have some interesting variations. I see there is a nice collection of microtomes on eBay.... A word of caution! Microtomes are extremely heavy. I suggest you look locally for one!...

Re: Stomata Comparisons

I wonder how difficult it would be to get a cross section of a Stoma? I suppose you would need a bit of luck as well? I see there is a nice collection of microtomes on eBay.... Edit: I suppose it would make a difference if you try and make the section along or across the guard cells. I suppose if y...

Re: Stomata Comparisons

Great set of images, also really informative! The red food coloring is really working well with specimens like these. I can see that this "branch :D " of work could be really interesting! All the 100's of plants in my garden should be scared, VERY SCARED , soon the grim reaper will be visitin...

Stunning set of photos! The subjects really "pop" up on the screen, your DIC technique is really fantastic!

Many thanks Rudix, Here is another comparison, scroll down for Brightfield, Oblique, Darkfield and Phase! http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3863 Stunning images! Thanks! I can see that from a (artistic) photographic point of view DF could be interesting but all techn...

Re: Incubated creek mud.

Yes, I am sure keeping things stable for a long exposure could be difficult! I am fortune with a study with solid concrete floors build on a bank of rock (and no trucks in a quiet neighborhood!). Stabilizing the camera above the microscope could be fun, will see what can be done. Vibration is all ab...

Re: Alga [?]

Fascinating images!

For me it is also educational to see the difference between DIC and brightfield illumination on the same subject.

It does look a bit like something that is growing.....

Re: Incubated creek mud.

Interesting collection! Fascinating to see how the culture develops! As a matter of interest, what camera did you use? (Nikon?) and at what ISO? Thanks for sharing! Rudi Sony( Minolta, I guess), a5000. Yes, pretty grainy. The ISO was set on auto, so I don't know exactly but it was very high, probab...

Re: Objective with iris?

I use the declaration of " broken lens" sometimes. well, good luck. I think they are the same objective. They are plan to the edge of a 20mm field but like many of the lower end objectives, there are some sacrifices, principally with regards to contrast. Certainly, the price is right. Yes, the pric...

Re: Objective with iris?

sorry about the last one. must have had a lapse of consciousness at that point. where are you? i bought a couple of small items from that seller and they arrived quickly and in good shape. No problem! South Africa, the problem is our local post office, stuff disappears if it has any perceived value...

Not sure why Amscope prices are all over the place. This seller, I know to be honourable. The objective is pretty good. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-60X-INFINITY-PLAN-MCROSCOPE-OBJECTIVE-lens-DIN-/320813944728?hash=item4ab2004f98:m:mm1mJsOnbRptkyxdS-PMOdA There is this one too. http://www.ebay.com/i...

Re: Objective with iris?

Maybe getting a 60X objective would be a good option? But I have not seen one for this microscope with an iris. An iris is usually only necessary, for objectives over about .85 N.A. , so normally 60 to 63X achromatic objectives do not need an iris diaphragm to effect oil immersion DF. 30 watt halog...
