Re: chipped lense I think....

Thank you Chas and Apochronaut, I do have a lens spanner but I need to find it. It's missing in combat, one might say. OK, I wondered because the black ring doesn't have two holes, only the one with the screw. I'll give the lighter fluid a try because I tried to move the upper disk before and it wou...

Re: chipped lense I think....

No, it moves freely. The lock screw or the front ring on or off doesn't make a difference.

Re: chipped lense I think....

Long time since I started this thread. I finally cleaned the outside of the lense and I do get an image, but still not very clear. When I look into the objective with a loop there is all kinds of debris in there (perhaps fungal growth, I'm not sure). It became clear that this objective has seen quit...

Re: chipped lense I think....

Thank you Apochronaut, that's very interesting. The replacement is a Vickers, doesn't have the Microplan designation but looks exactly the same as the Cooke Baker Microplan, which I photographed. The Vickers (replacement) shows the same 'crater' or concave section, albeit behind a flat glass surface...

Re: chipped lense I think....

Just got the objective I bought as a replacement in the mail. This one is OK and didn't cost me an arm and a leg. Looking at that objective I can see that there is another element with the flat side out, probably kitted to the surface we're looking at on my defective one. I can clearly see the same ...

Re: chipped lense I think....

Yes it looks perfectly round and a bit wavy. I read (before buying) these Patholettes do have a problem. The table is resting on a lever which regulates the height of it. Works like a dream because there's no spring, only gravity. The disadvantage of that is that you can move the table up and agains...

Re: took the plunge on chinese objective

Still after evaluating it for some time I think it is good value. I decided to order the 40x, which comes at appr. $25 including shipping. I'll let you people know how it performs (to my eyes, that is). Got a wide field 10x ocular of the same supplier and I'm very happy with it. So I ordered a secon...

chipped lense I think....

I got a not too rough example of the Baker Patholette last weekend. All works well, needs a clean and the usual TLC but I couldn't get anything of a picture with the 40x objecive. Just inspected it with a loupe and I think the front lens is chipped. Please take a look and let me know what you think....

Re: took the plunge on chinese objective

OK, that's good advice. Just emailed the supplier if he carries any oculars of the same make.

What was wrong with the 20x objective you sent back?

took the plunge on chinese objective

I wanted a low power objective for some time and spotted these: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Achromatisch-Objektive-4X-10X-20X-40X-60X-100X-fur-Biologisches-Mikroskope-/182289400552?var=&hash=item2a714b82e8:m:mkoLUvz5g0wI7AUt_kY3amQ The pricetag on the 4 x made me finally take te plunge. I got the objecti...

Re: What kinds of bench furniture and storage do you have for your hobby?

And here it is in all its glory. Fits my mics quite nicely. The leaf is stable enough to work on and I can put an extra leg beneath the leaf when I need it to be rock stable. I'm very happy with this arrangement. Everything at hand in the living room and tidy at the same time (with the lid closed, t...

diatoms dissapearing in NPM

Perhaps this is common knowledge but to me it came as a surprise so I thought I'd share. I tried to make permanent slides of diatoms I cleaned in bleach as proposed here: https://www.jstor.org/stable/3226387?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents I used nail polish mounting medium (NPM) because I like using h...

Re: could this be restored?

OK, that's a good idea. The heat could soften the balsam. My filter was made in the 50's possibly early 60's so with my little knowledge I'd say balsam is the expected cement.

Re: could this be restored?

Thank you for your very interesting and informative post. Yes that looks exactly like my filter and I already found that it still works although I can't compare to anything decent and/or modern. One more question. I have acetone and could soak the complete contraption in that. But I'm hesitating to ...

Re: My first microscope

I couldn't agree more.

I guess a modern scope would get me better images but it's immensely rewarding to bring back some of the quality which was put in 60 years ago. And I find the black stands are below zero on the cool scale as well 8-)

Re: could this be restored?

Thank you for both suggestions. I might need both in the end. I'll try to soften the cement. I have quite a few solvents around but I don't want to damage the paint in the engravements. The filters are an interesting proposition to get thing working. Still another question: So there are filters like...

could this be restored?

I just recently found a second Nedoptifa microscope and it has a polarizing setup. The lower filter is delaminated and I'd like to restore it. Are these kitted layers of glass or am I looking at something different? Could they be separated and 'rekitted'? I didn't get to the upper filter yet because...

Re: What kinds of bench furniture and storage do you have for your hobby?

I really enjoyed peeking into your labs. I just recently started microsopy and currently I use the work desk for observation and store the bits and pieces in a case. However, just a few hours ago I bought a secretary desk at our local second hand store. The idea is that everything will be in the des...

My first microscope

As promised I'd post a picture of my Nedoptifa S. It has the standard 8x, 40x and 90x oil objectives, 5 and 10x eyepieces and some extra Euromex eyepieces. In fact there's one in the picture. When I first got the scope everything was stuck and dirty, the biggest problem being the fine adjustment. It...

Re: hello from the Netherlands

I think it might be a while before I'll take a look at my yeasties as well. As I mentioned: one needs a reason to buy a microscoop :D. Now it's here I like the diatoms much more. The other scopes from Nedoptifa are rare as hens teeth. Yes, the one shown looks tempting but I think scopes like that on...

Hello Oliver, I see you have a Breukhoven student microscope. Breukhoven is 'around the next street corner' here and I found myself tempted to buy one of their models. Could you comment on the quality of optics and general build quality of the Breukhoven you have? >>>edit<<< Just after I posted my r...

Re: hello from the Netherlands

Thanks! It's this one: http://stichtinghistorischemicroscopie.nl/microscopen/samengesteld-achromatisch-microscoop-statief-s-sm-49/ but a bit older and complete with 100x oil, 5x and 10x oculars, case and even the original Nedoptifa oil (which I won't use ;) ). Although I'm already looking for a more...

hello from the Netherlands

Being an amateur cider and wine brewer I needed something to see how my yeast is doing. Well, that's not really true because I have been brewing for years without a worry, but one needs a reason to buy a microscope. Also, I have fond memories of fooling around with a toy microscope as a boy so I dec...
