Re: Not happy with my videos

You might have better luck if you can adjust your camera while filming. I have exactly the same set up as you do. My camera (Canon 5D Mark ii) is mounted on the microscope and connected directly to a computer using the free Canon software. The computer screen shows exactly what the camera sees and I...

Re: Tending the jarred pond

Put the jar in indirect lighting, make sure it's open to the air and has enough water that the whole thing doesn't dry out.

Re: Should I Purchase a BH2?

BH2's come is several flavors- my BH2 BHTU is fine but it only gives 6 volts of light- apparently is not enough for DIC. If you think you'll want to do DIC down the line make sure you get a BH2 BHS. The BHS is 12 volts.

Re: Where do you find Stentors?

I'm not sure if this is helpful, at least at the moment. The lake I from which dip supports a huge population of stentors in the winter, not so much at other times. It may be (and this is just a guess) they come closer to the shore where the water is warmer and go back to the center of the pond when...

Death to some, dinner to others

The stentor is dying and probably leaching bacteria which the paramecium are eating.

20x, phase contrast then resized to 25%
The sample came from the lake in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY, USA

Re: Oblique filter suggestions

I can sometimes achieve obliqued-ness by setting the phase contrast condenser between stops. This is photo is 40x and the condenser set between 0 and 10 (Olympus BH2 BHTU setting). The same setting using the 20x objective gets me to dark field. https://www.smugmug.com/app/organize/Micro-unknown/Misc...

camera settings for LED lighting

I have been using an Olympus BH2- BHTU and a Canon EOS 5D Mark II for several years. Using tungsten lighting I set the camera to ISO 640, shutter speed 1/80 and white balance tungsten. The camera is tethered to a Mac and I focus and tweak the setting based on what I see on the computer screen. All w...

I tried follow the directions, but I seem to be mechanically and artistically incompetent. Fortunately I found a kit for sale on eBay for $50 which I have been pretty happy with. The seller makes the set for a variety of microscopes. This isn't an ad- I don't know the seller. https://www.ebay.com/it...

Re: thinking out loud here - moral thoughts

Over the past few days I have watched a coleps ingest a small cell, fungi attack a rotifer (I think), and an amoeba engulf a diatom. This seems to be what nature is about. While I applaud your concern for the lives swimming in the samples we collect I try not to be too obsessive about it.

I just purchased this everything (oblique, darkfield, polarizing, Rheinberg) kit specifically for BH2's. I've only been playing with it for a few days, but I'd delighted with it. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Olympus-microscope-condenser-darkfield-polarizing-Rheinberg-oblique-insert-set/264323855175?ssPa...

Before I retired I was an epidemiologist at the infectious disease bureau of the NYC Department of Health, which is why I am concerned. Nothing could make me play with bacteria without strict sterilization protocols. How do you handle the less photogenic aspects of bacteria?

Re: What kinds of bench furniture and storage do you have for your hobby?

We are in the process of renovating a cellar and I've carved out an 8' x 12' space for microscopy work. This won't be reality for another few months so I haven't done much real planning other than a very sturdy, washable work surface with lots and lots of electrical outlets. I'd be interested in any...

Re: NY Times Video Report on Pond Micro Life

I sample the waters of NYC, too- mostly in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. I noticed less life near the shore in warm weather than cold weather. Algae (schmutz, as it's called in NYC) disappeared, leaving only cement and dirt near the shore. People fishing have not noticed any change. Does pond life migrat...

If we all maintained a .01% level of Glenlivet (18year) we would not be concerned about this. I strongly believe this because a member recommended it.
