Nice set of photos! The last one of is of an amoeba called Diplophrys. The orange-colored oil droplet is nicely visible.
Thank you!
Yes, that amoeba was rather mysterious at first, and I wasn't even sure if it was an amoeba. I do like the weird ones. :)

Re: Newbie learns to take images, dtsh edition

Great images dtsh. I can totally sympathise with being a newbie, it's actually much harder than it sounds to simply take a photograph through a microscope. Most of the learning curve is, or was for me, comprised of many mistakes and the occasional ah-ha moment. This forum is very helpful and just re...

Re: flickering problems, how do you deal with it?

I forgot about this post, until it got a reply recently. As an update: however the result was achieved, either a chance usage of a different power supply or something to do with the led, but now I'm using the led mod from forum member Saul, that annoying flicker has gone. I can use whatever shutter ...

Do like the Hydra images :) Thank you 75RR, yes I has been looking for a hydra for ages and finally realised I could have been missing them the whole time due to the size of the pipettes, I didn't know how big they were. Now I see them in my samples quite often with the naked eye and use larger pip...

Sorry haven't posted here in a while. Recently started back up with the microscope and photography again. Came here hoping to get some advice on an objective and post some images but got sidetracked, ended up on this thread. Been using the flash/LED mod from Saul for the last few months and really l...

Hi guys. Long time no post. I hope you are all well. I recently started using the microscope and doing photography again, after a bit of an absence. Just getting back into the swing of things. Re: vaginicola oblique

Hi Aenima, nice video, I don't care for the white balance. It is beautiful how they move synchronously most of the time. You oblique setup gives a nice contrast. Do you use a video editing software? With Magix Deluxe 2016 Plus you can make changes to white balance, contrast, sharpening etc. Bob Ooh...

Re: vaginicola oblique

thanks guys i agree, very interesting to watch the synch'd movements of creatures like this - i suspect they both reacted to the same stimuli - possibly a vibration of the microscope stage...? I often deliberately tap the stage to elicit that type of response from say a Rotifer or Vorticella :P alth...

vaginicola oblique

An old-ish recording from a couple months back, i originally ditched it due to botching the white balance/colour balance - leaving a pinkish off-white tone - but as my local pond seems dead for the winter i'm looking back and lowering my standards :p for usable footage. I still dislike the colour bu...

Hi Aenima, the first one is a Centropyxis most probably aculeata. thanks :) i looked it up and it seems bang-on Second one ?? I wonder if phase contrast is the right method for this kind of object? yeah it's very unattractive, especially the murky looking shell (test?) but i sometimes like the high...

Re: Amoeba (arcella?) 'walking'

cheers fellas - yeah, i did find a lot of the amoebas were rather slow moving, although i did find one that blew me away - it wasn't just fast moving, it also had strange thin and numerous pseudo-pods that seemed to be shooting outwards [a bit] like mini grappling hooks - at least that was how i ima...

I love the way amoebas move, and especially when they appear to get up and walk :P :geek:

Re: Imaging with a DSLR

yeah ISO 800-1600 is good for astro, (long exposures and pixel integration/stacking) but for most other types of photography these ISO values are quite high - i would aim to use 100 - 200 ISO unless very fast shutter speeds are needed, say for moving subjects (pond-critters etc) - but even then its ...

great shot indeed - i've also seen these in my own samples - i noticed they appear to have two 'modes' of behavior; sometimes zipping around, and other times remaining still for quite a while with their insides swirling around in circular motion, this is the best time to get images i think. :) They ...

Thanks 75RR - I just placed the shell on a slide and removed the condenser below it, leaving it hanging in semi-darkness - then darkening the background even more when editing :)

Thank u Bryan and Rodney - Bryan, yeah i used focus stacking for the snail shell, I think it's the main method that is used for DOF, besides using camera lenses at extremely high aperture settings i don't know any other way to achieve it. :) each frame in the shell image was a stack of around 30 to ...
