EPI unintentional

While experimenting with my ongoing EPI journey I inadvertently took this image. I will not disclose what it is of, but maybe others have seen similar before. It was not taken with an EPI objective, just a standard APO one (10x) using vertical illumination. Photographed with a Nikon D300s fitted to ...

Re: EPI dedicated hybrid

Hi again guys. I am looking at modifying my epi arrangement based on this discussion. What I have come up with so far is to place the illuminator directly on top of a Nikon 'S' series polarizer (see image) that is sitting directly above the nosepiece. This will reduce the tube length to ~188 mm. The...

Re: EPI dedicated hybrid

Thanks, everybody for the advice/suggestions. I think, Bob, your suggestion of sourcing an epi microscope is probably the way to go. I have asked one of the Russian eBay suppliers to put something together for me to think about. He is suggesting an epi M27 microscope (MMU-1 or MMU-3), Lomo I guess, ...

EPI dedicated hybrid

Hi. I am in the process of setting up one of my microscopes as a dedicated EPI unit. I have got it to the point that I know it works but I have no RMS EPI objectives. Does anybody either have any they can sell to me or let me know where I can get them without breaking the bank. There are plenty on e...

Re: How to attach camera to Olympus BH2?

I have an Olympus CH with a BH-2 trinocular head. I have made a mount for Nikon F ( I use microscopy dedicated Nikon D200) but was not satisfied with it so have ordered one from an Ebay supplier in America, (newhopper (4872)). His price was US$59 with a 'make an offer' option. I got mine ordered for...

Re: Dark field tin crystal

I have spoken to the person that gave me the samples. I have also shown/given him a full-gloss image for his gem & rock shop. He has assured me that the image is of cassiterite as Scarodactyl suggested. Apparently, cassiterite is the main ore associated with tin crystal form.

Re: Dark field tin crystal

Apochronaut. Given that way back in 1982 thereabouts I only just scraped through geology 101 within my first (BSc) degree know pretty well zilch about the subject. I have however read that tin, tungsten and gold often occur together. Could this be a chance occurrence of gold amongst the tin I wonder...

Dark field tin crystal

While carrying out more dark-field experimentation, the attached image of tin crystal structure surface at 200X magnification has me somewhat bewildered. My setup was simply under lighting on my Olympus CH with an 80A photographic (blue) filter over the light source, also a make-shift dark-field arr...

Re: Phase contrast microscopy

PeteM. The phase contrast instrument is, as far as I know, a standard under-stage one to suit Lomo Biolam microscopes. The mounting diameter is ~37 mm. I say approximately because the one I have on my modified Biolam is around 36.83 mm. The NA = 0.8 is the figure the supplier told me for the condens...

Phase contrast microscopy

Hi. I have just purchased an inexpensive Lomo 'negative phase contrast' condenser to experiment with. The NA is 0.8 according to the supplier. The unit comes with two objectives that are supposedly specific to this type of microscopy. The item has not arrived yet so I would like to learn something a...

Re: Dark-field white sugar

Scarodactyl. What you say is absolutely correct. If the quartz sand from the area is established to correlate proportionately with the clay used at the time than one could assume that the quartz was not added intentionally, however, we know for a fact that in contemporary clay, the quartz is added f...

Hi. I haven't been here for a while. I have been very busy with other academic related issues. I have been putting together some equipment for dark-field stuff. This is my first attempt. Re: Black ant from LOMO 10X APO

MichaelG ... yes, the LOMO APO seems quite good. There is absolutely no modification to this image notwithstanding a couple of spots that appeared on the background due to exaggerated specs of dust on the ccd that I fixed with the rubber stamp in a generic image (PhotoFilter) program.

Hi. Just testing a newly acquired Lomo 10X APO lens on a Olympus CH 160mm tube length microscope. Lighting is direct circular LED. Camera is Nikon D200, 40 exposures 1/5 sec 10um shifts, DMax. DIN vs RMS & verticle illumination

This is probably a silly question but just thought I would ask anyway ... Is it possible to change the nose-piece to a DIN then use an adapter with a light path around it so as to use RMS objective for vertical illumination? If this was possible it would save the huge extra cost of EPI/APO infinity ...

Here is another one where I actually used a analog gauge so that each stacking image is precisely in increments of 0.01 mm travel of the stage. I tried this using both a Vickers objective then a Carl Zeiss Jenna APO ... This on is with the CZ objective around 50 images I think.
