Re: Hund Wetzlar replacement condenser???
Thanks for the info! When I found it, the coarse focus and the condenser carriage were completely frozen. I took it all apart, cleaned, lubed and reassembled it and... did not notice the tiny set screw poking up above the condenser holder. With that screwed all the way in I can just get the condense...

Hund Wetzlar replacement condenser???
Hi there! It's been a while since I've been on the forum, but I recently came across an old 'scope at work that I may have the opportunity to adopt. It is a Hund Wetzlar. It looks like the H600 frame, but I believe it is a very basic model. It's 160mm tube length. It has a 6V 20W halogen lamp, 0.9 A...

Re: First Pic Post
Thanks! It was kind of a happy accident. I was just searching through the chemical cabinet for substances with 1) low melting temps and 2) little toxicity. These are spherullites of niacinamide. I just put a little on a slide, covered with a coverslip, melted on a hot plate and let it recrystallize ...

I had a little downtime at work and was playing around a little. Got a couple pictures of the slide I made with my cell phone on the Fisher Micromaster I have at my bench. These were taken with the 10x objective through a 10x eyepiece. They are cropped to maybe 50% of the original field of view. The...

Re: Cover slip selection live subjects
I like 24x50, #1.5 coverslips for live samples. Objectives sometimes have a marking with a recommended coverslip thickness. The most common is 0.17mm, roughly the thickness of a #1.5. If you are getting too much water flowing out around the edge of your slide, try starting with less water. You can a...

You might want to try leaving them open, or capping them loosely or covering with clean fabric instead. They'll do better long term if there's some gas exchange.

Re: The very weirdest thing I've yet seen
Could there be some kind of contaminant in the vessels you're using to collect your samples? Maybe some residual detergent or chlorinated water? Just a thought. I've been curious since your started posting your photos of water bears (which are very nice by the way!). I haven't seen a *lot* of them, ...

How sensitive is a Series 4 tube lens to decentering?
So I was working on cleaning dust from my AO Series 4. I cleaned the top and bottom surfaces of the correcting lens above the objective turret and then saw some dust on an interior surface of one of these lens elements. I disassembled this correcting lens as carefully as I could, removed the dust an...

Mounting medium for small invertebrates?
I came across this on the EMS website today: CMCP Macroinvertebrate Mounting Medium: CMCP is a colorless, non resinous, water miscible mounting medium for permanent transparent mounts. This medium used like Canada Balsam, it can be used to mount almost any material, provided it is not stained, calci...

Thanks! This is very helpful. And, it would appear, that I can't spell Stylonychia. They are really fun to watch; if I'm lucky I may be able to shoot some video of them some day soon. I'll need to wait for the ponds to thaw out first. They definitely are fun to watch! I saw a couple (maybe not the ...

Re: AO Spencer 146B?
The reason I'm asking is that I see a 146B listed on ebay for a lower price than the 146s that are currently available. Just wondered if itwould work as well as a 146 for eyepiece projection in my series 4. Sounds like I should stick to a 146.

AO Spencer 146B?
Here's a quickie. What's the difference between AO Spencer WF eyepieces 146 and 146B? Anyone know? EDIT: I managed to find both eyepieces in the AO Spencer "Cycloptic" catalog on PS Neeley's page. Looks like the 146 came with the cycloptics with Apo objectives. (And with the series 4 with achromat o...

Illustrated rotifer ID key?
I'm just getting into home microscopy. I find rotifers fascinating, I'd like to learn more about them. Is there a good guide that might help me to ID them? Found one tonight in a sample of tree lichen. It was very active. It moved by the "inchworm" style of locomotion. It didn't swim at all. It had ...

Now two people who are incompetent have been messing around with it. :) I'm trying to improve my competence, though. Found it. It was on the rear surface of the prism splitting light path to the two EP tubes. Unscrewed the front of the bino head from the body and found it right away.

unusual to have a fingerprint on a prism surface inside the head. is it possible it is on the optical window, in the bottom of the head? Yes. I'm sure. Shining a light in through that window in the dovetail, I can see that both surfaces of the window are clean and the smudge is inside on the surfac...

Re: AO Series 4 illuminator cleaning tips?
So, I got the spanner in the mail yesterday and have begun my program of dust hunting. I decided to start from the top down. EPs are pretty good now. I unscrewed the eyepiece tubes, cleaned the windows sealing the top of the bino head. Then I was dismayed to see that there is a big ol' fingerprint o...

Re: WTB: AO Spencer #1054
Thanks for the suggestions. 1054 is the one Apochronaut recommended that I try, if I could find one. I was just looking again at the at the series 2/4 catalog on PS neely's site. Looks like there was an EP, probably with the same optics as the #146, but with a focusing mechanism in the top, #435. I'...

Re: AO Series 4 illuminator cleaning tips?
I think I'll take a chance with the cheap spanner. It's in my budget right now. I'll figure something out if I have to lube the stage. Checked illuminator alignment. It seems like it's not great. When mirror is on plane, field iris image is shifted maybe a third of the way over towards the right of ...
