Re: Ceratium, Tachysoma & Uroglena

Thank you all! Very nice! Thank you for sharing. Did the second Ceratium explode shortly after the photo shoot? Not as far as I know, but I saw others bust open. Perhaps from the heat from the lamp and the pressure from the cover glass. Gorgeous image capture of that ciliate with the symbiotic Chlor...

Ceratium, Tachysoma & Uroglenopsis

Going through some old and troublesome stacks, I finally took the time to try to sort these out. The Dinoflagellates are difficult to stack as they are very irregular and tend to give a blurry surface structure. The Tachysoma (I think, but not sure about the ID) was moving fiercely, so I had a hard ...

Bio Lab for Kids

A couple of weeks ago we took our kids to a science day where they learned to write code for robots. Also, they had a Bio Lab where they practiced DNA extraction from banana and learned how to grow bacteria from their fingers on agar plates. After a few weeks the agar plats had turned into an intere...

Re: A match and a shell

Nice image. At that magnification though, I think a macro lens directly on camera would image even better with more creative lighting possibilities. Many members at photomacrography hold that opinion, after conducting comparisons. Yes, you are absolutely right. The scope was the setup I had at my d...

Thanks Billben74 and Crater Eddie!

Still have not figured out what these balls are, but the could be an invasive species that decided to grow a colony between the legs.

Yes, you are right. It was a failure (DIC wise). I should have tried fluorescence which may have given interesting results.

Egg of Artemia Salina

I revisited some old stacks which I have failed to nail. In this stack I found that the some of the single images were good by themselves, so I selected this one which had halo rings in the background. It is an egg from Artemia Salina in DIC. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4467/37864561861_2e37a168e...

Water Mite

I found a tiny (what I believe to be) Water Mite in a sample. It was redish/brown. The size was just bigger than a large copepod, so I managed to get most of it with 4X objective. It is a water mount with a thick layer of water and a coverglass resting on small blobs of bees wax. I tried all possibl...

Re: Please help ID (some kind of rotifer I guess?)

Johann, great shot! Funny we found the same species just a week apart. First time I stumbled upon one. Seems rare, at least in my samples. Your image also shows the "fried egg" looking structure inside. Any idea what that is?

Video of various things

When I go through my samples I usually film interesting subjects that I later take stacks of. Some are too fast and impossible to capture in a photograph. In those cases I find video to be good for documentation. Here is a selection of the last month of video clips put together. https://youtu.be/uVb...

Re: Two Rotifers - Euchlanis & Polyarthra

These are indeed lovely images. I'll second Polyarthra ; the first is a Lepadella with the head extended. You can see the notch for the foot and the two red eyespots very well, both of which are characteristic. In Euchlanis the foot emerges from a wider space between the lorica plates and there is ...

Two Rotifers - Lepadella & Polyarthra

I see a lot of Rotifers in my samples. Some are more photogenic than others... Apparently there are more than 1500 different species of Rotifers. These two are Lepadella & Polyarthra. (Thank you member actinophrys for the ID!) DIC. Note: I see that I have messed up my notes for these images and I am...
