Re: Olympus CX21. Your opinion?

I think 500 is a decent price. I had a CX40 which looks very similar. They also have infinity objectives and I paid $700. That was like 5 years ago. I would for sure go for infinity objectives as it is more future proof. It will allow you to upgrade to a more advance stand later if needed. Microscop...

Re: Copepod Egg Sacks

Thank you all for looking and for you comments! Very nice! Thank you for sharing, Hakan. The Copepod photo was taken with 10x objective, I am guessing? How many frames did you use for that stack? Yes, 10X. 26 images in the stack. Stacked in Helicon Stacker. Beautiful copepod and cladoceran water fle...

Copepod Egg Sacks

It has been a while since I posted. Work is killing me so not much time spent behind the eye pieces I am afraid. However, thought I would share this little lady. In dark field with polarised light. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4654/24796445867_957546026d_b.jpg Egg sack of a freshwater Copepod by H...

Christmas Greetings from Sweden!

I have not posted much lately due to heavy workload, but I thought I would send a Christmas greeting to all of you from the land of Santa (Finnish citizens may disagree...). I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year! Found this Daphnia that must be one of Santa's little helpers. In Polar...

Re: Ceratium, Tachysoma & Uroglenopsis

A fellow forum member suggests the the Uroglena in fact is a close relative, Uroglenopsis. There are actually entire research papers on the topic on how to identify the differences between the two species (!). Looking through the paper, I think Uroglenopsis is the correct ID. I have changed the titl...

Re: Ceratium, Tachysoma & Uroglena

The camera I have now is quite good at freezing motion due to its high shutter speed and firing rate. What camera and your technique please. I switched from Canon 6D to Sony A9. The 6D was useless for water and oil immersion due to shutter vibration. Even though I could carefully select the shutter...

Re: Ceratium, Tachysoma & Uroglena

Thank you all! Very nice! Thank you for sharing. Did the second Ceratium explode shortly after the photo shoot? Not as far as I know, but I saw others bust open. Perhaps from the heat from the lamp and the pressure from the cover glass. Gorgeous image capture of that ciliate with the symbiotic Chlor...

Ceratium, Tachysoma & Uroglenopsis

Going through some old and troublesome stacks, I finally took the time to try to sort these out. The Dinoflagellates are difficult to stack as they are very irregular and tend to give a blurry surface structure. The Tachysoma (I think, but not sure about the ID) was moving fiercely, so I had a hard ...

Bio Lab for Kids

A couple of weeks ago we took our kids to a science day where they learned to write code for robots. Also, they had a Bio Lab where they practiced DNA extraction from banana and learned how to grow bacteria from their fingers on agar plates. After a few weeks the agar plats had turned into an intere...

Re: A match and a shell

Nice image. At that magnification though, I think a macro lens directly on camera would image even better with more creative lighting possibilities. Many members at photomacrography hold that opinion, after conducting comparisons. Yes, you are absolutely right. The scope was the setup I had at my d...
