Re: Attempted stacked image of protist

It is very difficult to stack moving subjects. Almost impossible. I think you managed it well! What is even harder is when you have a moving subject alongside stationary subjects. Zerene/Picolay and more advanced stacking tools have the ability to rotate, scale and move subjects so that stacking can...

Welcome to the water world! Great to have in the toolbox as it gives such great working distance at 60X.
Great shots! looking forward to what the future will bring! What DIC prism are you using? I assume this is Water Immersion with Air between slide and condensor?

Re: Simocephalus (Vetulus?)

Turned out this image was selected to be part of the UK exhibition tour: Royal Photographic Society's International Images for Science 2017. Mislabeled and everything as this is not a Ceriodaphnia but a Simcephalus. I reminded them about that, but seems like they forgot to change the name. https://r...

Golden Algae

In a recent freshwater sample I found a lot of golden algae. I believe these are Synura and Dinobryon. Both colonies had several layers of cells/members and were extremely difficult to stack without various artifacts and swirls. Took some manual retouching to get a decent result. Anyhow, here they a...

Re: Nematode in 60X

Very nice! So for this fast stacks, is focus moving manual or automated? Manual. For fast moving subjects I try to keep focus as best I can and let the camera capture as fast as possible. For slow movers or stationary subjects I can slowly roll the focus in a more controlled way and lower the frame...

Thanks HKV. Do you make use of flash at all, and if so, what are your thoughts regarding practicality and quality? No, I never use a flash. I have actually never tried it. I use a camera with great ISO performance and have not yet seen a need for a flash. Thanks HKV. Do you have a super powerful li...

Re: Nematode in 60X

Thanks everyone! I agree and would also like to learn about your techniques. No special technique. Just waiting until one (on rare occasion) sits still for awhile and then quickly try to shoot a stack. In 90% of the times it fails, but sometimes... High ISO and short shutter speed are key here to b...

Vorticella (as seen through a Sony A9)

I have had the opportunity to evaluate the Sony Alpha A9 for microscopy use. The Sony A9 mainly target sports photography which in many aspects are similar to microscopy when chasing a subject to be in focus and keeping it inside the frame. I tried the burst mode with 20fps and captured a moving Vor...

Re: USB digital microscope

Luis, you will not see any individual bacteria with that scope. You need a "real" compound microscope. Even with a professional microscope, bacterias can be difficult to capture because of them being so small and also transparent which makes it hard to get good contrast. Staining is normally used to...

Superb. I agree with you about single images well focused. Are the backgrounds in your photos cleaned up - or do you have nice clear samples? :-) I applied a slight gaussian filter to the background.
