Re: Best Practices for Re-Using Slides and Coverslips

I clean my slides but throw away all cover glass after use. I have a box with glass to throw away and a box with glass to be cleaned. I never use cleaning fluid. Just rinse under tap water and wipe it off with a fiber cloth or my T-shirt. I only try to use high quality glass. All on ebay in bulk pac...

Re: Red Algae - Polysiphonia

Thank you all for you comments! Yes, I agree. Darkfield is a fantastic technique for beautiful images. I just bought a new oil darkfield condenser that will allow me to go all the way up to 100X at NA 1.4. Before I could only do 0.9.

Red Algae - Polysiphonia

I have been growing red algae in a salt water sample jar for some time. Grows in small balls of red threads. This is Polysiphonia at various magnifications and illumination techniques. Re: Duplo Illuminata

Thank you all for your comments! Hi Håkan, great images, thank you for posting! I like the second image best - is this a blend of bright field and dark field? Bob No, it is reflected brightfield meaning external light source and a metallurgical objective. The other technique was fluorescent light wh...

Paramecium in polarised light

I shot this Paramecium in polarised light. Individually picked by a micro pipette to clean water for rinsing and then individually picked again and put in a clear water drop to remove all possible debris. 10X and 20X objectives was used. The last half was filmed in 120 frames per second to get a "sl...

Duplo Illuminata

Inspired by the photographer Stephen Wilkes (Instagram: @stephenwilkes) “Day to Night” images where both night and day are captured in a single image, I decided to capture microscopic beauty using dual illumination techniques and combine them into a single image. Some images in this serie, which I c...

Please don't be offended, but they look kind of other-world science fiction like with that illumination. Maybe like the brains of some alien life forms. Amazing photos! Under ordinary bright field they would look kind of plain by comparison. Ha, ha, no not offended! Yes, a friend of mine called the...

Cosmarium

I just got a new darkfield (oil) condenser for my scope which I have been playing around with. Also, bought a retarder (wedge plate) which generates a lot of nice colors! Excitation filter: 440-440 nm Dichroic mirror: 455 nm Emission: 475 nm The 440 is quite inside the excitation range for chlorophylls and pheophytins, but other molecules will also be excited.. @hkv Very nice and impressive work. I wonder which wavelength you used to excite the red fluorescence, and which setup (lamp, filter cubes etc). Are these on the Olympus BX51? I am asking since there are several possible wavelengths, and several chlorophyll and related molecules. Yes, Olympus BX51....

Lucky to have found Micrasterias in my samples, which are very beautiful (and big). Could not fit the entire subject with the 40X, so the full body shots are taken with a 20X objective. I just acquired a new oil darkfield condenser so this is the first image with the new toy. 20X, Polarized light: h...
