Re: stains can't get it yet.

Go to the pharmacy and buy a small bottle of iodine. Very cheap. Here is one for $7. http://astore.amazon.com/laborarecipe-20/detail/B000V4RPRQ Also read this article which are trying simple food coloring agents found in super markets. Hard to find anything cheaper than that... http://www.microscopy...

Re: Limited Budget Scope

A fellow forum member just sold an Olympus KHC with phase contrast for $230. I think that was a good deal. You do not have to spend $500-$700. A beautiful piece of equipment and high quality. However, a good deal normally requires some patience and time spent on ebay searches. I am sure the Amscope ...

Re: Limited Budget Scope

i disagree that Olympus microscopes are overpriced. As always, you get what you pay for. A used quality microscope from any of the top brands usually delivers far better performance than new chinese brands. If you could live with that the equipment does not look brand new with some scuffs and marks,...

Congratulations! The Olympus high end BX-seriers are wonderful devices. I have several BX51s and VERY satisfied. I agree with your comments on pricing though... I have DIC (both for my UPlanFLuorites and my UplanSAPOs), Phase, Brightfield and Dakfield. It was a small fortune, but you don't have to b...

Re: Second "discovery" in xmas tree water

Thanks 75RR and Gecko. Yes, it is DIC. Olympus PlanFL-Ph with DIC. I get a pretty OK DIC effect even thought phase contrast objectives are not recommended for DIC. I now have added UplanSAPOs to my collection, also with DIC. Very good lenses, but horrible expensive. I have not tested them yet though...

Thanks Vaselle/75RR. Yes, it must be a Melosira Diatom! I wish google had better image search so we could automatically match images to the database... But then again, how fun would we then have helping each other with ID:ing our finds :?

Re: Fur beetle larvae

Thanks, Gekko and Rodney!

Unfortunately, a fur beetle larvae is nothing you want to find inside the house since it eats your furs and clothes. The adult animal is a brown beetle with dark spots on its back. They are harmless, but the larvae is a pain.

Olympus UplanFl. I use 4x, 10x, 20x, 40x and 100x. Actually they are Phase, but I did not use the phase condensor for these images.

Re: Diatom?

I wish I remembered the magnification, but it is for sure an Olympus UplanFl. I think 20x, but since I also have a magnification changer so sometimes I have 2x on the changer and a lower power objective. I need to start write down my config for all images I take.

Fur beetle larvae

Here are some pictures of a fur beetle larvae. Some of the stacked images are a little blurry because I could not get him to lay still. I tried ether, but it did not help. I hope you like them. Full body. Brightfield. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ewqkfr89m51w0mb/Fur_beetle_full2.jpg?dl=1 Full body, dar...

Crisp and clear! I have only started to learn stacking. Seems like it takes a lot of pre-processing to get good/excellent results.

Second "discovery" in xmas tree water

Making a second attempt. Hopefully a little more in-focus images this time... :)

I know the last critter is a Rotifer, but I cannot identify the rotating ball and the small-nosed fast moving guys.

Re: Rotifier feeding

Hi Gekko, you are absolutely right. This was sloppy work as I did not make all adjustments properly. I wear glasses normally, but did not use them so most likely the camera was slightly out of focus. And yes, it was cropped by the camera as I see more in the eyepieces. Also, the Rotifer was way thic...

Hi,

You may find this link useful:

I believe the CH2 have the same tube length as the BH2, so you may get those adapters to work.
