Re: New member: need Ortholux help please!

Hi. Just a comment regarding "the light will not work (it was supposed to and seller does not accept returns)". ebay has policies to protect the buyer against inaccurate listings. You can attempt to work out a fair resolution with the seller or ask ebay to step in and arbitrate.

Re: My "new" Leitz Laborlux(?) POL circa 1960, 2 questions

Thanks "75". Some great Leitz documentation out there!

I figured out that the lower "arm" engages and focuses the Bertrand lens. The upper dial engages a "pinhole diaphragm". Still working to figure it all out. Cheers!

My "new" Leitz Laborlux(?) POL circa 1960, 2 questions

Hi all, I bought this very nice scope to expand my hobby into petrography. I just set it up and centered the objectives and all is good so far! I have 2 questions someone might be able to answer. 1) Red arrow in attached pic: this is the Bertrand lens control I believe; there seems to be 3 settings,...

Thanks a lot MicroBob. Yes, its quite nice and looks and feels almost new. Seems strange to me to lack a brand, but I guess it's not uncommon. Cheers!

Manufacturer of this petrographic scope?

Hi all, I just purchased this petrographic scope on eBay. Seems to have a quality feel although it is certainly a basic model. It resembles the Spencers of the 1940's I've seen online. There is no trademark or model # on the scope. Anyone know the likely origin? Unbranded Spencer? Generic knock-off?...

Oliver posted a recommendation:

I used a Magnifi 2 for iPhoneX which was great but phone-specific and a bit pricey.

Good luck!

Re: Calcite thin section

Nice! Its crystal twinning. Crystal twinning occurs when two separate crystals share some of the same crystal lattice points in a symmetrical manner. The result is an intergrowth of two separate crystals in a variety of specific configurations (wikipedia).

Re: feldspar phenocryst under POL

Hi 75RR, thanks. Yes, i rotated one of the polarizers as I don't have a real petrographic microscope with a rotating stage. I haven't done petrography in ~45 years so I am quite rusty. Other than being attractive, colors on the feldspar crystal, when the polarizers are crossed, indicate that it is a...

Thanks Billt. It was interesting to take the somewhat friable shale sample, break it up, boil it in water with a dash of dish soap, dry it and then pick out these tiny 100 million year old fossils!

Re: Foraminifera from Tropic Shale (Lower Cretaceous), Tropic Utah

Thanks jb89, this foram lived for tens off millions of years, per my paleontologist friend, so not a great index fossil, but still definitive for the early cretaceous and interesting morphology. I look forward to you posting some foram pics!

Foraminifera from Tropic Shale (Lower Cretaceous), Tropic Utah

My friend brought over a sample that we cleaned and this is one of the forams we found. Top image shows aperture (mouth area) and second image is of opposite side. Stacked images with my SZ7 w/2x AUX lens.

I'd be interested to see you do a comparison of same subject of BF, DIC, DF and Phase; or a subset of those.

Thanks for posting Michael, this is very cool!

I used to wear one contact lens for reading. My brain could use info from my left eye for distance and right eye for up close. Sounds like a similar approach, at a high level.

Would love to try it!

Well I followed Hobbyst46's advice and it does seem to focus properly. I guess it's finicky but ok. Oil was needed on top and it might have been a bit better with the condenser oiled as well. Thanks to all!

Problem achieving focus on my 100X objective

Hi all, after reading Roldforf's recent post on 60X objectives, I decided to ask about an issue I'm having with my "new to me" Reichert Microstar 410. I can't seem to achieve focus on my 100x CAT 1759 1.25 NA objective (using prepared Amscope sides). Seems like I can't get close enough to the sample...
