Re: Chinese Plan Achros or Lomo Achros

Well I have a parfocal adapter for short barrel DIN objectives Just a note of clarification here: DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) are 45mm standard objectives and JIS (Japan Industrial Standards) are 36mm standard objectives Also, I would want to know if the objectives are a good investment to...

Re: Best of the low end options for use in high schools

You did not respond directly to my earlier post so I'm not sure to whom you are speaking. But I do have a limited budget so I would like to purchase the models most likely to be good, durable, and useful and in the right price range that they are in the reach of a public middle or high school. You n...

Re: Best of the low end options for use in high schools

I think I've been where you are and have done what you are proposing, but I'm not sure I understand all that you are trying to do. If you could provide some specifics, more that what you have, it would be helpful to me. It's too bad that you are limited in your purchasing options as there are many p...

Re: Esten No. 20324 Microscope-help

Esten was a brand directed at the educational market, junior and senior high school, in the 1960s and early 1970s. They were generally a simple monocular with a horseshoe base. There were a couple of choices in the number of objectives, but I never encountered anything more that an achromat. I doubt...

I have one of those scopes and they are superb. I have not spent any time looking for parts, but the bright field setup I have is excellent.

Leisure Lake Diatoms as seen by lorez

I finally had a chance to look at the slides of the diatoms from Leisure Lake (courtesy of Rod) and take a couple of photos. I would like to thank Rod for sending several very professionally prepared slides. All the diatoms were right at the cover slip and scanning the slide was very easy, except fo...

Re: Swift Brown Paint code?

Over the years the Swift microscopes were produced in several different countries and more than several different factories. As the changes were made there were subtle changes in the paint colors; generally not enough to be noticed, but different enough that the serial numbers became necessary when ...

Re: Swift Brown Paint code?

Back in the day I had touch-up quantities of both colors, but they are long gone. There were never any paint codes offered. A paint store can match the color if you have something from which to start, but without that... no luck. Maybe you could get some bottles of model paint and mix your own. I've...

Re: Stuck spring objective -- any way to free up?

My experience with lighter fluid as a "dried lubricant" solvent is that it is temporary. If you don't complete the disassembly and re-lubricate the component you may have problems. In the case of this objective a vey light application of "light" oil is sufficient. For the adhesive on the end cap, th...

Re: OMAX Microscope

As it is designed the OMAX microscope works very well. Image quality is good on all objectives and illumination is good. The 20W halogen is enough to support the features of the microscope. The photo tube is parfocal, but will probably need a bit of tweaking depending upon your camera choice. It wil...

Re: OMAX Microscope

Welcome to the group. I have experience with both of the models in which you are interested. I would recommend the OMAX model. I don't think either of the scopes have the versatility you are looking for. I do agree with fan that the Nikon is a better microscope, but you will have to do some shopping...

Re: Stuck spring objective -- any way to free up?

I recently bought (eBay) a PC telescope in perfect condition, but the seller did not know it was supposed to focus. I was able to get it moving by using my heat gun. I was very nervous and it took enough heat to warm the outer barrel so it was too hot to hold and then enough time to allow the heat t...

Re: Stuck spring objective -- any way to free up?

There is no need to remove the back aperture of the objective. The lubricant is on the outside of the protruding barrel, as is the spring. You could apply the smallest drops of lighter fluid around the protruding inner barrel and let it soak for a while. It may take a couple of applications before i...

Re: Stuck spring objective -- any way to free up?

I don't think I would do any of the things you are contemplating. I checked my stock and I have a 100X PL Fluotar, but not one of yours. In the case of the objective I have the entire internal barrel will protrude from the rear of the casing as the spring is on the outside whereas the objective fan ...

Re: New Purchase Bestscope Model BS-2080 Chinese vs Big 5

So I am shopping for generic infinity plan objectives that look the same as the ones I have as well as cheap olympus objectives, if that is possible. I have a 20X objective that is almost identical to the set you have. It is from a different manufacturer, but I don't know positively that they are b...

Re: New Purchase Bestscope Model BS-2080 Chinese vs Big 5

My old eyes are not the best for evaluating such detail perhaps. Boy, isn't that the truth. Over the years I've seen a decline in my acuity and am always mindful that just because I don't see it doesn't mean it's not there. I think you are wise to use something like the diatom slide as a benchmark....

John Benjamin Dancer was the pioneer of microphotography and I think one of his slides would be a fun specimen. Getting one is another story. A bit of google for terms like microprinting may give you some ideas. Have the kids collect a bunch of natural specimens as there is nothing more fascinating ...

I don't think we are really concerned with the looks..more the optics. You've made my point, exactly. What I am saying about the looks of the knob applies to the entire microscope and to the optics most importantly. I've been trying to point out for a long time that there is more to an objective th...
