Re: sanity check on new (to me) scope
Hi, I posted re a dirt-cheap way to fit a very bright LED panel under a stereoscope's stand a while back. I've been using this method for several years now, and have even transferred said panel to my newer stereo 'scope as it is so good.... See my post with images . This is a very good solution inde...

Re: intel NUC
I have the same problem with my i7 Windows 10 HP with SSD laptop. It boots and loads Windows 10 in about 4 seconds - but runs Toupview with a 5mp Toupcam at a pathetic 2-3fps.... My 32bit Linx Windows 10 tablet doubles this.... Tried just about everything, power settings included, driver loads/reloa...

Re: Leitz dry objective for high magnification
I didn't have that problem but it's definitely worth checking. Rest-assured though that the seller listing is honest and would I'm sure refund you if you had any problems. The 100X apo that I had was a really bright & clear objective, a real performer. There's no harm in asking for a final check - a...

Re: Leitz dry objective for high magnification
Hi Rossf - here's one of the 100X listed now in the U.K.. The seller is one from whom I've bought several times and is totally honest and reliable in my experience. Very likely responsive to an offer too. I've no connection whatsoever with this seller beyond my custom of course.

Re: Leitz dry objective for high magnification
They really were superb.
You need to ensure that your TL is correct for your 'scope - there are 160mm and 170mm (Ala Orthoplan in the above case) 'scopes and objectives.

Thank you very much Mrsonchus for your very helpful and very detailed reply! The "Water immersion", in terms of time and "feasibility", in a very good compromise. Re: Leitz dry objective for high magnification
Thank you very much BMN, I will try to follow your advice. In the old Leitz catalog there are many "oil" lenses, even of medium power ... Ther is also some Water objective (W engraved)...they are said to be easier to use, but equally good even if water has smaller refractive index than oil...and pe...

Hi, I recently acquired a Nikon SMZ800 my first job was also to attempt to attach a camera.... Re: Ilex leaf with worm hole - pen ink stain
Hi Bob - yes, not only do such 'infections' make good images, they're pretty easy to achieve also. The penultimate image is safranin + alcian-blue (an alternative to safranin + fast-green). I prefer fast-green for accuracy and subtlety of finest detail but alcian-blue for more 'drama' in vivid colou...

Re: Ilex leaf with worm hole - pen ink stain
Hi, this was in the tissue - a typically 'mushy-brown' appearance of an infected closed-vegetative bud. It's a handy stain and very cheap. I also have sets of slides that I have made of infected plant tissue, e.g. Sonchus.arvensis stem and leaf tissue. The permanently-mounted slides are great as I a...

Hi, I use pre-made lactophenol cotton-blue for live staining fungus - high contrast and pretty good.

Re: Motic SMZ143 with Motic 2x SLR Projection Lens
Ahhh PVC waste-pipe. I Used a bit of this to make a quick mount for a Canon DSLR with one of those rather poor eyepiec connector with optics adapters - works well and parfocal but I'm going to use a projector eyepiece as this is the best way I've found so far for quality. Here's the DSLR on it's was...

Re: WANTED 88-90mm frosted glass round stage plate
I think my best-bet is to grind 2mm from the diameter of the ones I have spare, formerly used on my Amscope.... Worth a try. Meanwhile simply placing the Amscope one over the recess is working very well apart from the fact that it sits of course proud of the table surrounding it. Beneath the recess ...

Re: WANTED 88-90mm frosted glass round stage plate
Thanks Pete, I sent off for one of these this evening, may take a while but at that price it's worth a look - if it's a little big I may be able to take it down very slightly.... Ideally I'd like a couple of the Nikon ones but so far nothing's out-there. They're exactly 3½" diameter.

Re: New Stereo - Nikon SMZ800
Very nice image einman. I spotted and bought irises for the SMZ800 and they've added a nice measure of flexibility to the light/focus mixing that I really like with a stereo 'scope and Botanical dissection. The SMZ is really very nice indeed, and I've today finished fitting the LED panel under the s...

These are very nice pictures! Great also to begin-with. Your basic technique is demonstrably sound I'd say, a great jump-off-point. Direction of image-taking, one direction only, either up or down as it were for the set. Some stacking software prefers or is optimised by design for one or the other b...

Re: Is this normal?
Agree with Hans - it's like a thrust-plate on a clutch - grease is recommended to be as thin as you can get for the fine focus I think - thick grease is for the coarse focus. Friction from spring/spring-washers may be the braking mediator for the fine focus.

The irisis came this morning but I had no time to fit and try them! Anyway I just came home and gave them a very quick try - they took all of 1 minute to install between the body and phototube. At first look they are very effective indeed - I was taken-aback by their contribution. As possibly ...

Re: New Stereo - Nikon SMZ800
Yes I struggled with the choice once I'd decided on a larger budget, the Wild classics such as the incredibly configurable M3 series or the beautiful M8 with zoom and larger range - the shift-head for coaxial photography....... Then there's the venerable Olympus SZH - a beautiful 'scope also. The de...
