Re: Alternative mountants

Yes, I suppose not doing a quick search on the forum was a pretty obvious oversight!

I’m curious about the high RI products not being solid, though. The NOA 170 I linked states, “when fully cured is very rigid and brittle.”

Alternative mountants

It seems that high refractive index mountants are difficult, or at least very inconvenient, to source. I’m curious if anyone has experimented with optical adhesives available in a variety of refractive indices. Norland seems to be the most prolific, but a few other manufactures have them, as well. N...

I use something like the linked product at work. It is very good for some things, but 1000x is completely untrue. In reality 100x is pretty accurate. You definitely will not be able to observe bacteria in any way.

That doesn’t exactly match either of my 410’s. I don’t know if there was much generational variation. The friction element under the left course focus is obviously different among other small differences. One of my patents is for a specialized gear train, and the illustrations don’t match the final ...

Diatom Shop experiences

I was wondering if anyone has experience with Diatom Shop (www.diatomshop.com) and specifically their general strew slides. How would you rate the quality? The test slides get good reviews, so I'm curious if the strews are as good but unsorted / un-arranged.

Re: Microscope and monitor sharpen?

Nothing stupid about that--even the language to describe it isn't standardized across or even within brands (erect/upright/nonreversed) and it's a non-issue for most normal microscopy so it doesn't get discussed much. That's why it's hard to figure out whether a particular head has the feature othe...

There are slso 23/30 that are configured on an AO pattern.
How would the average person be able to spot this? (No, Phil, you aren’t an average person in regard to microscopy.)

Re: 23mm diameter 10x/22 eyepieces (!)

And why did the big brands not make 10x/22s themselves when 23mm eyepieces were in vogue? Maybe this has just gotten a lot easier with modern supply chains and computer design methods? Maybe they weren't interested in (or capable of) designing all of their objectives to be aberration free all the w...

All I can say is, think classic Mercedes vs 80's Toyota. The Mercedes doesn't have as many features and the tech is older, but it still feels crafted with care in a way the Toyota won't. It's not better. It's not worse. It is very different. I hate to inject reality into the conversation, but most o...

Since I decided not to experiment with configurations without eyepieces I have no specific use in mind for the removed corrector other than reverse engineering. If anyone wants to suggest ways to separate the doublet I would be happy to try. Soak in Xylene or Acetone? I'd use a diamond saw if I had...

Don’t rule out the AO series 10. They are wonderfully robust, use the same optics as the 110, and can be had at bargain prices. I have a 10 and a 410, and there are many things that I actually prefer about the 10.

I don’t think I’ve read you troubles with the photo eyepiece, but I’m very familiar with the complexities of attaching a DSLR! The eyepiece you linked is very likely using the same optical formula as your 30mm eyepieces. If it does, the images using your phone and Celestron adapter would be just as ...

Labcam says, "Your LabCam purchase already includes the 30mm and 23.2mm adapters". Is the photo eyepiece not 23.2? Other sizes would be unusual. Ah, I see what you mean. Re: Microscope and monitor sharpen?

Focus through the eyepieces and do not touch the focus again. Does lifting the camera improve the focus or make it worse? If lifting is an improvement, you have an easy path: find the correct height and fashion a permanent spacer. If lifting makes things worse, it will be harder to fix.

Motic sells t-mount photo tubes for your microscope. The adapter accepts a photo eyepiece designed to project the image to a camera sensor. That is likely the same 30mm size as the normal eyepieces.
