Re: Greetings from Frankfurt

You mean it won't work for practical purposes? :/ My goal was to buy a simple, yet high quality and durable microscope with which to learn the basic technique. It will work fine. It is just that you have bought a collectors piece (with price to match) My first microscope was a Zeiss Junior KF, and ...

Re: Greetings from Frankfurt

You have bought a very nice microscope, but I think that it is more of a collectors piece. I wonder if it were possible to contact the seller - for that money you could have bought a more modern and more capable/practicable Zeiss microscope. There are some members here who are very knowledgeable abo...

Welcome jemarch, I am sure you will enjoy your journey into microscopy.

When you say Zeiss Junior KF is that the black 1950's microscope you are talking about? Can you supply a seller photo (until it arrives)

Re: What on earth is this?

Tabellaria grow in colonies so the different sizes you see is because of where it 'lets go' and 'hinges' from it's neighbor. Some of those have 3-4-5 in a bunch. Sometimes you only see one tabellaria in a 'bunch' and they form a 'star' shape. Agree. Your squares are actually joined together narrow ...

wporter - Agree that if you 'know' what you are doing, one can with suitable caution fish successfully in these 'turbulent' waters. My advice was for newbies - and still holds. because they really do not have the expertise, time, parts, or inclination to check for (e.g.) even a burned-out lightbulb ...

Very nice! Are they building in quartz?

Wonder if that is a deliberate choice (translucent house) or just available material - and yes I know they have no 'brain' :)

Re: Need advice buying a Reichert Microstar IV

Ebay has a pretty reasonable policy regarding returns. People just neglect to utilize ebay's buyer protection. If the listing said fully functional or works as intended or tested and working or some such thing then it should be fully functional. If the listing says as is, or untested or has some wo...

I was walking around in the park the other day and couldn't resist the sight of a floating piece of pond scum.
Do you carry sample jars as a matter of course or did you improvise?

Tidy places can prove challenging if one hasn't brought a sample jar!

Re: .65-.75 NA DF condenser

im using an amscope t610 with nikon objectives. You should think about getting a nikon stand to go with those objectives. There is a fair amount of variation in how attachments fit on each brand/model. That is one of the benefits of a true modular design, they will have the part you want and it wil...

Re: Zeiss WL Modified with Tilt Top

There is something fascinating about such an odd beast. Makes one wonder what it does that an inverted microscope can not do?

Agree that the slide holder would seem to be in the way - dual use? It does after all only take a few seconds to change the stage on the WL

The rest of Europe is fine, postage is relatively cheap + you have no import charges.

However, if there is a local microscope seller then do visit them, nothing like trying out an instrument first.

Re: Microscope advice!

A quick search on both Ebay UK and Germany did not return any hits for Diavar 2, not saying there aren't any but it would be simpler and more sensible to look for something that is more readily available. Maybe a very stupid question but is it a problem for me to buy on Ebay example USA? I have boug...

Re: Microscope advice!

Your list contains both finite and infinity microscopes. You may want to look into which system you might want and why.

Personally, I do not think that the price of high end infinity objectives has come down far enough to justify buying an infinity system.

Thanks Sinabro The D darkfield position on the Zeiss turret condenser, when oiled to the slide, provides nice darkfield, fairly close to that of the ultracondenser, even with an NA of 1. Agree. Certainly worth trying out if you have one and lack the other. The COL + Pol technique is certainly worth ...

Re: 40x SPlan woes

My feeling is that the issues are not due to the microscope itself, neither the coverslip; maybe related to the camera adapter and parfocality. There are many potential variables which you need to check and confirm before you cross them off your suspect list. Parfocality (camera is in exact focus w...

Hi Bobj,

some photographs would help better establish an ID of your Bausch & Lomb.

As to giving it to a 10 year old, I think you would find that a stereoscope would be more suitable.

You can get her a more modern compound microscope at a future date if she develops an interest in microscopy.
