Re: How much is my Olympus BH-2/BHS worth?

You know your daughter and your circumstances better than any of us, but I would be tempted to hold onto it a few more years if I could. I would agree. Almost 12 years old is a little young to expect a person to have developed an interest in Science. Give her a few more years and if it does turn ou...

Hi RaulAlonso, crystals always make for attractive images.

Can you tell us a little about yourself - I would guess your location is USA given your equipment but as this is an international forum (based in Austria) , perhaps you would be kind enough to tell us?

Yeah, I saw those. But they are overpriced. This link (items sold on ebay) should give everyone a clearer idea of what the Olympus projection eyepieces go for. Unfortunately the NFK 1.67x is rather rare and so does not to appear on the list which just goes back to February. https://www.ebay.com/sch...

Re: What coverslip thickness for permanent diatom slides

A quick google translate of a relevant paragraph in MicroBob's linked article: "The high refractive index mounting media do not run particularly well, so the recommendation is to use small round coverslips. The cover glasses should adhere as closely as possible to 0.17mm to enable the best resolutio...

Re: What coverslip thickness for permanent diatom slides

...Curiously there does not appear to be any mounting medium between the glass slide and the diatoms - I had assumed that the diatoms were immersed in the high refractive index medium (thought that was the point), yet it appears that the diatoms only rest on it. 1. Since diatoms are porous, and not...

Re: What coverslip thickness for permanent diatom slides

. I would assume that the slightly thinner cover slips are to compensate for the mounting medium, as I imagine that there is a thin layer between the diatoms and the cover glass. Edit: Just read the instructions on the linked page - which seem to be instructions for making a diatom strew slide. Don'...

75RR - just curious if you can tell us something more about this particular specimen - does it have any unique place or unusual story among the algae? Re: Bugs on film

Like the look of your Leica III and the focusing on the Focaslide is pretty nifty. I will probably end up with something like your setup on the Leitz SM with the 4x5 camera if the vibrations from my Olympus E-P2 (as I expect they will) prove troublesome when I try Direct Projection. The way I avoid...

Re: Striatella unipunctata x2

In my experience having too much algae leads to their decay and subsequent explosion of bacteria and various ciliates. Not to mention smelly. The impulse to jam the sample jar full of algae, which can be strong if you don't live near the sea, should be bravely resisted. A little seaweed goes a long...

Re: Striatella unipunctata x2

Many thanks PeteM and Wes May I ask how you collect these, did you scrape a rock or a perhaps some algae? I usually pull up one of the many ropes that dangle in the water from the pier at the local marina and pick the algae off them, it was what I did with the sample that yielded this diatom. Curiou...

Welcome and congratulations on your Microscope. As Scarodactyl says, that is a serious microscope. It is part of the Zeiss (finite 160) modular system, as such you can tailor it to your needs. Re: Compatibility between PH objectives and condenser

It is a good rule of thumb to keep to objectives of the same manufacturer as that of your stand. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, in finite systems, the eyepieces form part of the lens correction. This means that the objective and the eyepieces should be considered as one. In practice, ...
