Zeiss Universal Dust Cover
Hey guys, just looking for a dust cover for my new Universal. It measures about 11inches wide, 30in ish when factoring a camera tall, and 30in deep with lightsource. (28cm*76cm*76cm) I haven't seen anything close to these measurements and was hoping someone knew a good place for them. I'd prefer a d...

Re: Petroscope
I occasionally see older(very old) petro scopes for less than $200, generally LOMO or black enamel ones from the early 1900's I would think. I am sure they are good enough for hobby use. Do you have a way to cut thin sections? petrographic samples get expensive fast if you have to have someone else ...

Re: Zeiss Universal project
I was able to get a cheap used gear/control set but I am still interested in making some gears. For peace of mind I would prefer steel gears but brass is definitely an easier choice, there are also a few different methods to make the gears. I have a book on this that I will need to pull out of stora...

Re: Microchips in brightfield incident light
That's awesome! I've been thinking of grabbing some old silicon wafer dies to look at, they normally come in sets of 50 or 100 for less than $20, if I end up grabbing some I'd offer them to the forum members for the cost of postage. These are a few I was looking at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/49pcs-To...

Re: Carl Zeiss Axiostar Plus Beginner Question
Kalisto, Welcome to the forum! I am also out of my element a bit but love microscopes, I am studying geology but love looking at biological specimens (especially live) I can't give you much advice regarding your questions but I think you may be in need of different illumination techniques as opposed...

Re: Zeiss Universal project
I can do a write up fairly soon, there are some things that they didn't mention in the german language write ups and I didn't have the custom tools so I had to improvise a bit. Turning the small gear down and soldering one with new teeth around it would probably be a quick and easy fix, I'll definit...

Thanks for that info MicroBob! Today I took my control knobs apart and no surprise but there are stripped teeth on the fine adjustment gearbox. Bad Gears.png I am going do make the replacement gears in CAD and then see how much it would cost to have them made in steel. I will also try 3D printing th...

Going to reserve this post for Q's and A's from the build process to that it's easy for people to find in the future. Zeiss Universal project
Well I went and bought a Zeiss Universal after talking to wstenberg a bit and I'd like to document me building it as my microscope primarily for geology/thin section microscopy. It's in overall great condition but no fine focus so I will probably need to order a replacement gear. It came with a few ...

Re: Choose a first microscope
Petar1,
What do you want to do with your microscope? What kind of specimens do you want to look at, what kind of illumination, brightfield, darkfield, DIC etc?
I'm sure someone here can recommend something great for you but having more info would help

Re: Stereo Microscope Advice on Upgrade
That's a semi-rare deal on an AO stereo star nowadays, though they're definitely great scopes to scoop if you can find a deal. Unfortunately that stand won't work with the head I have on offer--you'd need to get a 76mm stand to go with it. Unfortunately getting a stand with good built in illuminati...

Re: Stereo Microscope Advice on Upgrade
I was able to get an American Optical Stereozoom 570 with a stand, 1.5x Aux lens and lamp for $100; there are some fantastic deals out there if you take your time and wait for them! I recommend these scopes to all of my peers but it seems like the prices have went up/haven't seen any cheap ones late...

Re: What affects the image produced from two different microscopes?
The images don't allow a comparison. But if you have the impression, that your microscope's image is not allright, they you should check the optics for damages or dirt. Look at the front and back lens with phase telescope and stereo microscope. Shine a flashlight though the tube and check whether i...

What affects the image produced from two different microscopes?
At school we have Meiji monocular scopes and some Chinese scopes with plan non-pol objectives that produce really nice images but we have a Leica DM EP that produces images that look like my Leits SM-LUX-POL. This is an image from my SM-LUX-POL. Pic #1.jpg And this is from one of the chinese scopes....

Re: Zeiss Universal for Transmitted and Incident light microscopy
For incident light microscopy you should try do determine what you want to do with it. Incident bright field gives hazy images of low contrast. This improves a lot when polarizers are added. Dark field would give the best image of biological subjects. DIC is used to identify surface irregularities,...

Re: Zeiss Universal for Transmitted and Incident light microscopy
I have a Universal, and there are nosepieces for a single objective as well as turrets for many objectives. It is very easy to switch out nosepieces and condensers when you want to change modes. Minutes or less. It's a popular microscope, and parts come up all the time. Not hard to find most of the...

Re: Zeiss Universal for Transmitted and Incident light microscopy
Have you had a look here: http://www.science-info.net/docs/zeiss/ ? I hadn't seen that and it seems like the reflected light attachment can use its town turret so you can swap between transmitted and reflected in how ever long it takes you to swap the turrets and condensers back in and out. I have ...

Zeiss Universal for Transmitted and Incident light microscopy
Hi guys, I've been using my Leitz SM-LUX-POL for a while and it's great for transmitted light but I just can't figure out how to get incident light set up for it and I'm starting to thing that trying to find the objectives for it will cost a fortune. In my search I've occasionally found microscopes ...

Darkfield for AO 570
Just got my AO 570 and it's great, I'd be really interested in setting it up for darkfield, i just don't know what the options are.
Are there existing AO accessories for this or is it a DIY thing?

Re: New microscope! AO Stereostar 570
Nice find! The 570 is a beautiful scope and it works great. That 1.5x aux is a bit rare, so that's a good bonus. I have a 0.5x on hand at the moment, but your current stand will not work with it iirc. At the very highest extension the glass stage will almost be in focus. The accessories list/manual...

Re: New microscope! AO Stereostar 570
Scarodactyl -- Ahh gotcha, most of my samples will be pretty large height wise so if it's already close to my max height adjustment it almost certainly wouldn't be practical for me, is that just the specific one you have or is that all of the 0.5x aux lenses? New microscope! AO Stereostar 570
I've been looking for a stereo scope for a few months and just managed to snag this for about $100 shipped The optics look fantastic, the light is not great but it definitely gets the job done. It came with a 1.5x aux lens which I hadn't even noticed in the original pictures, eventually I would like...

Calcite thin section
Just finished this calcite thin section, it's a fairly soft mineral so it was easy to make at home with sandpaper, I will probably make a new one soon and switch from coarse grit to a finer grit to prevent having the scratches visible in the final product. I am not sure what this pattern is called i...

rock and mineral sample give away
Hey everyone, I am moving to a new apartment and that has spurred me to go through my rocks and minerals, instead of throwing anything out I figured I'd offer them up here. I have some rock billets which would look great as a petrographic thin section but will require a lot of effort. - Billets will...

Re: Granite thin section
PeteM, My first one took many many hours, I broke a few slides and had to start all over more times than I'd like to admit. With just the bare essentials it depends greatly on the general hardness of your sample, I had a jasper conglomerate that took me nearly 4 hours of hand griding. A thin section...

Re: Granite thin section
Thanks!
In one of my field books there are instructions for making a DIY/portable polarizing microscope with a hand lens and polarizing film.
It's just generally not useful to use a polarizing scope on hand sample(for rocks, I have no idea about biology) so I have never bothered.
