Thilo Immel Optics at Göttingen is a realiable dealership. A bit more expensive but they know what they are doing and you are in good hands with Thilo Immel.

Do you carry sample jars as a matter of course or did you improvise?
I usually carry a small plastic tube with a screw lid whenever I go to the park. You never know if something intriguing pops up.

Paramecium bursaria

I was walking around in the park the other day and couldn't resist the sight of a floating piece of pond scum. Among the very many different things I found in there Paramecium bursaria was one of the most abundant species. I took a short video that demonstrates the movement and a couple of close up ...

I was trying to find out more about them and found a link to this discussion. I had read some of the references already mentioned and also that the cry...

Looks very nice, the only thing I'd change would be the angle of lighting so we can see more surface details. Where is your light source situated?

Very nice, that's my favorite diatom to play around with when I want to demonstrate the effect of condenser aperture and wavelength on resolution. You have now documented nearly all of the 8 form test slide with you 63x planapo as far as I remember from your previous threads. Are you planing on shoo...

Re: Numerical Aperature 40x

Typical NA for a 40x planapo is 0,95. Keep in mind that for a crystal clear image you want the specimen you're looking at to be as close as possible to the coverslip and you also have to adjust the coverslip correction colar. Otherwise the image will lack contrast and sharpness.

Re: Zeiss DIC parts (Slider holders)

In a nutshell you dip the prism in immersion oil which crawls inside the gap separating the two quartz wedges.

According to the author it is quite a durable hack that last for quite a while.

though there appears to be delamination in at least one of the prisms.

It contains certain risks such as bricking your camera. For example trying to boot the camera without the AUTOEXEC.BIN file c...

The nosepiece is from a Universal/Photomicroscope but the slider holders can be taken off and put on a Standard or WL
I thought they are stuck to the nosepiece. Factory aligned and glued in place.

Shooting video with Canon 50D - protists in DIC

So far I've only been able to take photos with my Canon 50D. Finally I got around to expanding the Canon firmware with Magic Lantern which now allows me to shoot 1080p video at 30fps. Once I have the have the video files on my computer I use ffmpeg for transcoding and editing. Here I present one of ...
