Re: De-doming (shaving) LED's

As a side note I've recently been using UV-LOCA TP-2500F Glue for slide mounting subjects. This is a UV curing glue used for mounting screen covers on mobile phones and tablets. So far it is working very well. It doesn't harden fully so care needs to be taken with the amount used to avoid flooding o...

De-doming (shaving) LED's

A while ago I bought a few high power Cree LED's and tested them while refurbishing a Vickers M17 microscope. I found the Cree XHP35 to have the most even phosphorous distribution and light pattern. Its a single die 12v LED with a die size of 3.45 x 3.45mm which closely matched the original filament...

Re: Info on my objective please

The GS logo is 'Gillette and Siebert'. They were a UK company who produced good quality microscopes up until the late 80's. Their microscopes were mainly assembled from outsourced EU production parts. I have one of their scopes and the objectives are achromats like your example. I'm sure someone her...

Re: Canon M50 limitations

Scarodactyl, I don't use it always but it is useful sometimes for positioning a moving object (eyepiece is widefield, image is cropped), checking focus when adjusting a 40x collar, that sort of thing. I like to be able to glance up from the eyepiece and see what the camera is seeing. Michael I sugg...

Re: Canon M50 limitations

I ordered an M50 2 days ago and awaiting arrival. I did my research and understood the camera can be triggered via EOS Utility 3 and USB tethering (as geo_man has working). My ageing 550D works flawlessly this way. The loss of a second trigger method isn't a concern, but I will be annoyed if Canon's...

Re: Micro stonemasons. Difflugia.

Chris... I got the 90D because I want a higher resolution APS-C; a fully electronic shutter from live-view; and I wanted a camera that could do a quick focus stack sequence when used outdoors or for lower magnification close-ups. It does all three. Like all other cameras it is not "perfect", but th...

Re: Interesting DIC-like effect

I just saw that you use a Vickers microscope! I have a good impression from them but very few poeple seem to actually use one. Bob Thanks for the reply. I'm really enjoying the Vickers M17 Bob, well worth the effort restoring it. Very heavy, no plastic gears, and a generous field of view. Despite h...

Re: Interesting DIC-like effect

Thanks for the info' daruosha, should have known there would be a name for it. This is similar to the examples shown in the document, though in this case the offset illumination is well outside the phase ring of the 16x objective. The attached pic is a crude shot down the eyetube (no phase telescope...

Interesting DIC-like effect

I was experimenting with 3D printed patch stops and stumbled upon this illumination effect. I'm sure this is not new to the more experienced members here but I found it interesting. I'm certain this is the closest I'll ever get to real DIC :D This might be specific to my setup, but here's how I got ...

Are you using the right eyepiece for the objective?
None of the eyepieces I have give a flat field (inc' a pair of Jena PK 6.3x). Not a problem though, I use this objective for video and the crop factor restricts capture to the centre sweet spot.

The old 33mm Zeiss apos gave a very nice image but had a lot of field curvature.
I can second that. My Zeiss Jena 6.3x Apo is great in the centre through WF eyepieces, but not good outside 60% of the viewable area. Obviously designed for NF eyepieces, even then it would not be considered planar.

Re: Highest power LED suitable for microscope?

Of the high power LED's I've tried some had issues with uneven luminosity due to patchy phosphorous distribution, this is visible through the eyepiece socket when focusing the lamp optics. The best I've found so far is the Cree XHP35, this is a 12v 13W monolithic die. The die size is 3.5x3.5mm and v...
