Re: Difference between Nikon E400 and E600

I have both an E400 and an E600, and the stage of the former I prefer, so I put it on the E600, so I guess the answer is yes !

Re: LWD objective on 0.18 cover slip slide.

Hi, I just started and made a silly problem. Instead of buying a finite 20x 160/0.17 I bought a finite LPL LWD 25x 160/1.5. What is the compromise of using this instead of the one for 0.17 cover slip? My intention is using it to capture crystal on slide, watch some dyed slide or slide without cover...

Re: Vintage diatom slides

Photographed with a x10 objective, bright-field, using a M4/3 camera. How are you getting such high contrast and lack of color? What type of condenser? To answer an earlier question, the objective is a x10 Planapo high NA for that magnification, of 0,5. Lack of colour...if the NA is higher, you get...

Re: Vintage diatom slides

More details...the slide is also a vintage one, labelled as Smith, Beck and Beck, at 6 Coleman Street, where they were from 1857 to 1865 so very old. There are three frustules on the slide. This was the largest. Whilst it is labelled Aulacodiscus oreganus the same as the OPs slide, it is clearly not...

Not the same species, but similar.

Taken with a x10, which has greater depth of field.

Cropped, to be comparable.

Food for thought.

Thanks folks!

@photomicro apologies, I can't seem to respond to your PM, presumably because of my low post count. I am from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

Thanks again for the welcome.
No problem, you will in time. My message was to do with amateur groups here in the UK.

Zeiss Ultraphot II, instruction booklet

In searching through a large pile of literature, I found an original copy of the (A5-ish) 92 page instruction booklet for the Zeiss (West) Ultraphot II, dated 1967.

This is free to a good home, for just the cost of postage (from UK) but is in German.

Along the same lines, I was going through the very large cabinet of a well-respected mounter of recent times, now not with us, and discovered one or two of his larger dry mounts that had lost their 'cells'. As you can see, the result has been rather drastic ! store properly.jpeg Then I found another...

Re: Dovetail on the bottom of a BH2 1.25 condenser.

It might be worth mentioning that the Nikon and Olympus dovetails are very similar, with the Nikon being slightly smaller. Hence, a Nikon condenser will fit an Olympus stand, but not vice-versa. There are a *lot* of similarities between say the BH2 and Optiphot (and others) stands of these two maker...

I have a brochure for this microscope, and the May 1967 price list, when prices were quoted in pounds, shillings and pence. There was quite a bit on this subject within the booklets published by NBS (Northern Biological Supplies) in the UK in the 1970s. Nicely imaged grouping photomicro, what objective did you use? Perhaps it is because I don't have DIC at present, though I used to ... What is the story there? Upgrading to an infinity system? Used a x20 objective. This is VAC, or variable amplitude contrast, which is easily made for any stand. In ...

Whoops, I had it wrong about the small ND filter part of the smaller slider; it is actually a glass disk that covers the entire hole. On it are plated the areas of 15% and 1%, the rest left clear. I can't say about your microscope. What make and model is it? What is the triangular filter for? edit:...

Re: Can i use lomo KF- 4 phase condenser with leitz phase objectives?

The bottom line is that if it physically fits your microscope, then it will work, but whether any of the phase annuli will match in size with the phase rings in the Leitz objectives is another thing. As it is, I am rather surprised the Leitz objectives work on this stand. The stand was designed for ...

I *think* they made a 'plug-in' filter, like the one shown in the pictures. I have no idea what make this is. This is a blue filter, but can support other discs such as stops. Of course whether this is the ideal place for such a stop depends on the design of the condenser. Another forum member also ...

Re: Kohler Trouble

Don't own an Olympus BH2, but as a 12v 100 watt Halogen puts out a lot of light (particularly as in order to maintain/extend bulb life it should be kept within a 9-11 volt range), it would make sense that it should have an ND filter for most observations and that it be removed for say high magnific...

Re: diatoms

Hi Frank, diatoms are basically transparent and have a refractive index around 1,45. To get a contrasty image a difference of the refractive index of the mountant of 0,1 is recommended. This doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be higher though. Diatoms in air give lots of contrast but you can't...
