Re: Clean sample

If you Google "make Irwin loop" you'll see information about how Irwin loops are used, and how they can be made. They allow individual critters to be captured and moved to a clean droplet of water on a slide. Using a stereoscope and a fine transfer pipette, I capture a gastrotrich (or other critter...

Re: Clean sample

I'll add the simplest method. Float a cover slip on the surface of a pond water sample and leave for 8 hours. Place a drop of clean sample water on a slide then carefully lift the cover slip off the surface and place on the slide. The hard bit is lifting the floating cover slip off without contamin...

Clean sample

I was wondering if anyone would share their procedure on how to obtain a clean sample to observe? All the videos and pictures I see online have very few clumps of grit. What are the tools to use and how to use them? Also, calming solutions, how to apply and what to use. Some of the animals move real...

Re: Rotifer (Squatinella mutica?)

Thank you for the information! All my best samples are from mud or really dirty water. That's where they all hang out :) So I've been thinking of how to clean samples. I think I'll start another thread and see if people are willing to share their procedures.

Re: Rotifer (Squatinella mutica?)

Very nice video! How did you get such a clean sample? Almost no soil or sand in the sample. You use a pipette to extract the animal from the original sample?

My first try

My first try at polarization. An Amscope made slide of a dyed red Daphnia. PolorizedDaphnia.jpg Second try. PolorizedDaphnia2.jpg Taken with my cell phone and a smartphone camera adapter mount. Two linear polarized filters, one in the filter holder and the other placed right on the top of the slide....

Re: Hello! And if you got some advice?

I just had one of two microscopes to examine. A SMZ-168 motic and the DRC Zeiss Stemi, not sure the exact number of the models. Both of them are very old. The Motic has 0.75-5.0 variablezoom while Zeiss has two targets, one 0.8 and one 4.0 and one which slide back and forth on a rail. The Zeiss is ...

Hello from Western NY

Hello everyone! My name is Mark. Back in the early 1970's when I was 8 or 10 years old, a neighbor gave me his old Erector sets. The old ones that were all metal, you know, the good Erector sets. In one of the metal boxes that housed the sets was a really old beat up microscope. One of the microscop...
