Re: Leitz pin connector?

The easiest way would be to change both of the plugs and use some generic two-pin plugs - provided that the voltage of your lamp and power supply are compatible. If you definitely want to keep your power supply intact and want to change the male plug, I should have one old-style plug similar to the ...

Re: Olympus FHT

Some time ago I made a very unfortunate purchase. Not very expensive so I didn't lose much. What I learned is think first and then buy. So I saw a cheap epi illumanator for Olympus in Ebay. It was from a microscope using NEO objectives. The illuminator was similar as seen here https://www.microbehun...

One major advantage of led light is that you can switch it on and off as often as you need. Conventional fluorescent lamps do not like turning on and off frequently. There are several discussions on this forum about this topic if you search. I have also built a fluorescent led light, however using i...

The microscope, for me, is more than just a tool for observation of small objects, it is a work of technological art and precision.
I certainly share your feelings. I have also found the historical perspective very fascinating. Thanks for interesting post and pictures!

Re: Buying expired slides - hit or miss

My very limited experience arises from hanging around in labs preparing either histological or microbiological samples. I think very few people there even knew what oblique or DIC is. Anyway having 100% clean slides is of course bright and beautiful. However, I am pretty sure someone did win the Nob...

Re: Buying expired slides - hit or miss

I am also familiar with this. It is not even a matter of decades but I have a package bought a couple of years ago which already have some fuzzy dots on the surface of slides. My solution: I just wash them with Fairy under hot water with a brush. Then I wipe them with paper towel. Though it is no 10...

Re: Olympus FHT

I also read about Olympus as being the best research microscopes. I don't think there is some brand above others. It depends on what kind of work you are doing and the condition of the equipment if you buy them used. I have Leitz Orthoplan and now this Olympus FHT. Both are of high quality and have...

Re: Are these cells!?

Is this a direct sample of water from a tank supposed to be sterile? Direct microscopy of water (or any solution) is by no means a method testing a sample sterility. You need to make a culture from a representative water sample and if something grows, then go to microscopy, and/or use some rapid bio...

Re: Olympus FHT

That is exactly what I am going to do. The main problem still exists. It is a daunting task to catch a pair of good quality eyepieces by this trial and error method. Most of them seem to have scrathes caused by careless cleaning and wiping with a dry cloth. Or have they used a piece of sandpaper, wh...

Re: Olympus FHT

EBAY FRUSTRATION I am becoming tired and cynical in searching good condition eyepieces for my Olympus FH. I received it with two pairs of eyepieces, all of which have scrathes in the front lens surface. They are usable up to 40x objective, however the scrathes interfere with 100x oil objective visio...

Re: Are photo eyepieces needed?

In modern microscopes, like in the example in the picture, there seem to be a very short phototube. It looks like almost the same structure as using my Orthoplan c-mount adapter alone. What is the structure of these modern camera mounts? Do they contain any lenses inside? I don,t think they contain ...

I think there are a lot of scientists who feel nature and research is more interesting than the company of other people. I say company, as what people do or what they feel and think may still be interesting as such. I would call this state of personality introvertism. I share myself your feelings an...

Re: Are photo eyepieces needed?

Thanks. Maybe so. The adapter is rather heavy, robust and made of steel, which gives me the impression it is intended to be used directly and not on top of the tower (red part). While the lower phototube I have is very light and made of aluminium...

Re: Are photo eyepieces needed?

Thanks. I know and I have also the phototube which fits into the trinocular head and the eyepiece can be fitted inside the tube. I have no upper parts yet, however planning to make. What I mean is that the adapter has c-mount thread and a digicamera can be inserted directly. I assume this is how it ...

Re: Are photo eyepieces needed?

This camera adapter came with my Leitz Orthoplan. It has no lens inside at all or any place for attaching an eyepiece. If the Orthoplan system needs a projection lens/phototube with an eyepiece for proper image correction - as far as I have understood right - why this adapter has been manufactured i...

Re: Need help choosing a microscope

What is not always understood is that a compound microscope itself is only a part of the job. The other part includes more or less complicated sample preparation which often needs special knowledge and especially patience. When I was a child and got a cheap microscope as a christmas present, there w...
