Re: Cleaning wave plates

Yes it would be much softer, however, I don't know for sure that in your case you will actually be cleaning the mica. I could be wrong but you may actually have a mica disc sandwiched between two pieces of optical glass. May be someone else can chime in here that is more familiar with the Japanese e...

Re: Cleaning wave plates

I clean mine with an aqueous solution and lens wipes. I loosely wrap a piece of the wipe around a small swab with plenty of cushion between the end of my wrap and the swab. That way there's no hard backing so it's more like a brush. Saturate the makeshift swab/brush so you can sweep the surface in a...

Re: The easiest microscope to tweak, modify

I rather like the labophot/optiphot line too. The one major advantage they have over the olympus series is that direct projection onto an aps-c sensor is possible (with some modifications to the microscope heads) and the result is capturing the whole good FoV of your objectives on the camera, rathe...

Re: How to preserve crystallized chemicals on a slide.

This is a good question and it's something I have experimented with, but had little success. I think most of my Victorian era mounts are dry mounts with some sort of spacer to raise the cover glass as Mr. EYE suggest. However, what keeps the crystals fixed in place long term is the question. In theo...

One of the easiest instruments to build on to and that has a lot of readily available parts on eBay is the Olympus BH2. It's a great instrument with good to excellent optics depending on your budget. There's also a wealth of downloadable literature available for them online.

Interesting. I think this is the full pdf downloadable... The chloral hydrate puts a stop on the Hoyer's formula here in the U.K. that's for sure - an alternative must be out-there though? Is any amount or any product containing any amount of chloral hydrate illegal? Can you order ready made Hoyer'...

All So learning my new scope I'm deathly afraid of using the 100x not wanting to mess with oil (irony of all things considering where I work lol). I understand you may not need the 100x now but down the road when or if you start getting into viewing other specimens you should learn to get get comfo...

Why are Russian optics so good?

I was going through some of my bookmarks and came across this article. A lot of you probably already read it but for those who haven't it is an interesting read. Kirby http://www.novacon.com.br/lenses08.htm Edit, I just found this one too and for what it's worth I'm sharing. It's a bunch of old micr...

Nice clean videos.

I'll never understand the thumbs down responses on youtube. Your videos are sharp and clear and you captured some nice little pieces of footage. I guess there's a critic in every crowd. Probably some bumb who's never done anything more than click on a youtube video.

Re: Safety and Legality of Prepared Pathology Slides

It's a very good idea to disinfect used scientific instruments especially if you don't know their history. However if you're going to go through the trouble you might as well use s disinfectant that will kill everything. Again this advice was shared with me by someone who knows much more than I. The...

I had the same question about some anthrax slides I found in an antique store years ago. I asked a friend who studied and worked with anthrax and other deadly bacteria and viruses his whole life. This was his reply, "I would not take chances with anthrax. If they were vegetative cells, chances are a...

I can't knock China objective because I never use them but for the cost that you can pickup Nikon lenses on eBay that is where I would put my money. I picked up a brand new E plan for 30 USD a few weeks ago. I have bough Nikon plan objectives for less. Olympus "A" are fine for general use and can of...

Re: poor sharpness + contrast using 40X on self prepared slides

Just a quick thought I wonder how accurate the cheap cover glass size really is. Not sure how much a little size variation will hinder your image but it may be something you could check if you have a set of calipers. Certainly if you have too much mountent between the cover and specimen it could hav...

You can also look at microSD cards which often come with an adapter so they can be used as full-sized SD. For example "SanDisk Extreme microSDHC UHS-I" which is class U3 and comes with adapter is currently $10.29 for 32GB or $13.99 for 64GB on Amazon.
Thank you, hans!

If anyone plans on buying anything from this auction be sure to get a quote on shipping before bidding. I used to do a lot of these online auctions and the freight charges can be pretty extreme. I didn't read through this one but most of the auctioneers use third party shipping and they will give yo...

Was there an incident that you are aware of that knocked it out? It sounds pretty bad which may indicate an easy or obvious fix. I am not familiar with this particular Zeiss head but very often the first thing to look at and adjust (once you've decided you have no other choice) is the eyepiece tubes...

Yup the lens was probably gone and you dissolved what took it's place. . That is quite interesting how bad it got. I guess my filter cubes would eventually suffer the same fate had I not cleaned them. Funny how this type of reaction occurs over time.

I went back and looked at my conversation again. It was with Omega Optics. They actually recommended using vinegar as a solvent to clean it but I now recall I used ammonia which worked better. I think I tried other acids as well. Might be worth trying.

Re: Help disassembling a Zeiss objective

Glad you got it apart. I think that white crust is the same that you see on fluorescent filter cube filters. I asked a manufacturer what it was and what can be done and they said it has to do with the coating on the lens reacting with the metal the filter is mounted in. So I guess that is two dissim...

There are four indentations filled with paste but I think those are for some concentricity jig at the factory. A q tip won't help. Looks good. You will only be able to get a portion of the wing in focus at a time as its depth of field is smaller than the relief of the subject That's probably the problem.
