Re: gluing the condenser
Lenses are usually glued together with Canada Balsam. At least that’s how it was done in the past, they may have some new high tech adhesive now.

The link below is a GIF of the crystals growing, also shot on film. These were 10 second exposures shot one after the other, that should give you an idea how fast the crystals grow.

Beerenol Crystals
I'm a film photographer and I like to develop my own black and white film. I use a home made developer that I created called Beerenol or Beerol. It's based off Caffenol, another home made developer that has been around a while. Caffenol uses instant coffee where Beerenol uses beer. Lately I have bee...

Those are beautiful, lately I’ve been growing some ascorbic acid Chrystal’s with some good results. What recipe did you use to grow the malic acid crystals? Is this from a malic acid supplement that you can get at the drug store or do you need a higher grade? Thanks Bryan! Yup absorbic acid produce...

These are sales brochures for the Leitz SM Microscope. They have good information on the different options and accessories that were available plus data on the objectives and eyepieces.
This one is in German.

Re: Leitz SM manual
Very helpful Aslan, I have some literature on the SM that I can add to this once I get it scanned. I notice from this that I should be able to change to a dovetail mount for the condenser. I have noticed that there are a lot more options on eBay for condensers in that mount than the sleeve mount tha...

Re: Rotifer?
It is a rotifer, a bdelloid by the look of it. Under adverse conditions they form cysts - this protects them until circumstances improve. The lack of movement you mention was probably the beginning of this process. Some links: http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=46 Th...

Rotifer?
I was looking for tardigrades so I put some pond water in a container with some lichen and moss. I didn't find any tardigrades but I saw a few of these. I'm guessing rotifer but I have no idea. It wasn't moving at all, this was a long exposure, maybe it was dead. This was shot on expired Panatomic-X...

I work in the hazardous waste cleanup industry, we used to test oil with what is called the Beilstein, or copper wire test. It's very similar to the test described in your link but it was commonly used to test for chlorinated compounds in oil like PCB's. If the oil was chlorinated it would emit a gr...

Re: Leitz SM Medical Microscope
so I can make contact prints When I was 15 I had b/w photography as a subject in school. I told my grandmother about it and about the enlarger that was used. She didn't want to hear about the enlarger, all that was needed was a box with a bulb, switch and milk glass on it. Okay - what I didn't know...

Hi Bryan, thank you for posting your analog photography! These old microscope cameras were expensive and nicely made instruments but I really can't remember when I last saw an image made by them. I myself started digital photography late, it was 2007 and I bought a Pentax DSLR when 6 megapixels did...

Re: Leitz SM Medical Microscope
This is a test shot with my setup using film. This is the trailing edge of a mosquito wing at 450X magnification. Looks like feathers to me. The exposure was about 25 seconds. The film is expired Kodak Panatomic-X semi-stand developed in 1:100 R09 (Rodinal). I rated the film at an ISO of 25 since it...

Re: What is this?
It's a theodolite, for measuring angles in surveying. Nothing to do with microscopes. That's what I was thinking it is as well. It looks like it would be extremely heavy to use in the field, probably why they use more plastic in modern ones. I assume the viewfinder points down to get a measurement ...

Re: Storing and re-using slides
I don't think it's safe to mix an oxidizer with a flammable liquid, be careful with that. I can see where the dish soap would help prevent drying spots. Kodak makes a product called Photo-Flo 200 that I use to prevent spots when drying photographic film, a small amount works really well. Mix it with...

There are several on eBay right now, it's called a MIKAS microscope adapter or just search for "Leitz microscope adapter". As a general rule, I wind mine up to the very top, where it's brightest, and then lower it until I get good contrast. There are specifically stated position settings, but the people writing these in articles I have read usually say, "open it a little past the standard setting" and "adjust the conde...

What about repairing chips in the enamel? I was thinking of using automotive touch up paint, the kind they sell for filling in chips. It comes in a small jar, you just put a drop in a chip and it fills it in.

Welcome Tom, I just joined this forum a few weeks ago after purchasing a 1957 Leitz SM microscope. I'm currently working on making it a trinocular microscope. I also have an appreciation for the build quality of these black enamel microscopes, that probably comes from my appreciation of the Leica ca...
