Re: Two Favorite Amoebas from this week
Really nice catch. I’ve seen this type of amoeba move pretty quickly when they don’t like the light, but I’ve never seen one pull it’s test like this.
Thanks for sharing.

Re: Can't see sperm in microscope
They don’t last very long. Plastic might have the wrong refractive index, making the sample invisible, or might have killed them. Try a regular slide and coverslip, and don’t wait to long to get the sample under the scope. 400x is best. Looks like you’re going to have to take another one for the tea...

Testate amoeba
Here’s a testate amoeba I found in my aquarium.
Olympus IX70 60x HMC
I’ll go out on a limb and say Euglypha?
I had to chase her around. She really didn’t like the light.
Enjoy

Re: Microscope Nikon second hand price advice
Sorry for the late post, I just ran across this thread.
I have a couple of Nikon Labophot 2 scopes and a BX40.
The Nikon is 160mm and the Olympus is infinity.
IMHO, if you can swing it, the Olympus BX40 would be the better choice.
Probably way too late, but relevant nevertheless.

Re: Some Zeiss stands
Hi Radazz, nice collection! Is your big stage really flat and in good condition? I have one similar to this and it is deeply washed out and in additon of concave shape. Bob I got this one from St. Louis university medical school, and aside from some scratches it is just about perfect. I als...

Re: Some Zeiss stands
Impressive and nice. I have seen the very wide stage on the Standard 16 (or 18?) on the left in a Zeiss Brochure from that era. Is it advantageous in use ? I’ve only seen pictures and they were of a standard 16 with the rheostat on the base. The riser may be for a larger illuminator on a 14. Just g...

Easy polarizor to fit over older Zeiss field lens
Simple polarizer mount for older Zeiss field lens. Camera polarizer mounted in lid for specimen bottle. Perhaps I’ll paint it black. I believe the second from the left stand is English, but some WAG is involved.apochronaut wrote:Nice little collection. These are mostly French, are they not?

Re: Actinosphaerium dividing
This looks like Actinosphaerium 's little cousin Actinophrys . They don't conjugate; they actually have an odd sexual process where one divides within a cyst and then fuses back together again, called autogamy, shuffling genes without the reproduction part. But they do often capture food as small g...

I tried to stay with her all the way through, but camera battery died.

Re: Acetaminophen
If you have access to alcohol (ethanol 96% is best but lower concentrations also work) you can mix it with the powder, stir, decant't the soluble part, filter through cotton and put in the freezer. You should see acetaminophen recrystallizing on the sides of the vessel. Scoop the crystals, wash the...

I felt that way for a long time. 8 was such a disappointment. Really only added touch screen support but changed everything for the sake of change. I recently bought a new laptop with 10 on it. A little easier to find things than 8 but still took some searching. The new laptop processes video and st...
