Re: 1st steps in Stereo microscopy
Very nice 'scope! Congratulations. Thanks, this week is work off, so I'll give it a good cleaning. your printed diaphragm and filter holder are exactly like what I've got already built in with the base, maybe they where missing for you? .............. Yes they were not with the 'scope when I got it...

Re: 1st steps in Stereo microscopy
Very nice 'scope! Congratulations. I recently acquired an SZH with this base, which I find a joy to use. First job with the base is to clean the (two of them) frosted filters and the little concave mirror that sits directly behind the halogen bulb. Also the cylindrical reflector - be careful with th...

Re: Simple method to test objective using laser pointer
Very interesting indeed, and oh-so-simple to try! I for one will certainly try this, as progress during cleaning may be observable even measurable if desired. Of course trying for perfection may be a bad idea, but to be able to see any progress would help enormously in the sensible choice of a 'stop...

Re: Which staining?
Hi, hmm, sounds as though your slide-maker is either clearing the cellular contents intentionally, to optimize cell-wall deliniation (which is often desired, depending upon the area/tissue under study and the information desired from such a slide). For example a study of cell-division stages involvi...

Here's an image of mine Oh well … I have evidently ordered a different model MichaelG. Only slightly - and I can think of a couple of advantages for your version, the separate power control gives more versatility and perhaps even more useful - the ringlight's body is consequently without the bulk o...

Re: Like to buy a Ring adapter for AO stereo zoom
The listing doesn't give a diameter or have I missed it. What an odd thing to leave out. In order to clamp onto the blank housing of a discarded aux. lens he will need a 48mm minimum center hole. That one looks like it might be. What is the actual dimension, John? I found another listing that gives...

Excellent video, some very intriguing structure in there. Amazing to see how focusing is able to give 'layers' reaching into the diatom. This is DIC?

Hi Gasman, I see you're in the N.E. of U.K.? I'm in the N.W. (Cumbria in fact) and may be able to help. I have a quite recently bought Nikon SMZ800 that I'm very likely going to sell if I can get back what I paid for it. The reason is that I came across an Olympus SZH with a few extras that I have f...

Excellent demo of quality what can be achieved without a ton of high-end (and very expensive) parts. The video really is of great clarity - very nicely done!

Hi, yes that's right. The heat-filter glass is directly over the bulb, directly under the bulb is a small and very reflective concave mirror. Around the edges of the under-stage well is a cylindrical mirror to focus the off-axis light for DF when the DF mask swings into place. Also substage are two ...

Thanks chaps, I'm really pleased with it. What I did find a pleasant surprise was the quality of both objectives, but especially the 2x. Not high-end planapos of course but very sharp and very planar! The darkfield option available at the push of the large robust (as everything Olympus is in my expe...

Re: Image from Google Photos?
There is a size limit, a limit on both size, size and resolution, I have tried shrinking the size but still can't upload because the resolution is too high. A few images of those dirty lenses inside the zoom-housing mechanism - no wonder the first-look lacked a little contrast - hard to believe in fact just how good those images were with the glass this grubby!... Had To Buy IT!!
Hi all, trawling the net as I often do for new parts that may be handy for my microscopy at the right price, I came upon a nice-looking Olympus SZH, offered a rather affordable price as it had a buy it now or offers option, and had my offer accepted! This 'scope was in the U.K. (where I am of course...

Re: making longitudinal sections
Hmm, looking at your fine image closer does suggest an endodermis, as the thickened walls look to have the typical pattern of an endodermis as in the roots of angiosperms.... In fact a quick search seems to confirm that the strands each have their own endodermis - the thickenings of the inner-tangen...

Re: making longitudinal sections
Hi, I had a quick look at these cells this afternoon in some fern in my garden. I took some very basic longitudinal sections (hand) and had a look over them.... They do surround the vascular-strand of the fern stem/leaf/leflet but I'm not sure they are actually 'fibers' as defined for flowering plan...

Hi, I've been making permanent Botanical slides for about 6yrs now, and have always used a resinous 'canada balsam' type of mountant. I started with ' Numount ' (from Brunel Microscopes ) then moved on to ' Omnimount ' ( from Geneflow UK ). I am currently using ' Histomount ' (from Agar Scientific )...
