Re: Thoughts on a new workbench

Surplus used? Not sure how much it is nor what shipping would be. Still, no harm in asking.

Re: Another desmid

An excellent image. I would (after a quick search) go with Staurastrum sp. as well.

While it is true that it is another Desmid, it is also true that it is not just any other. Nice find - great catch!

That is some very nice equipment and general set up. Have heard nice things about American Optical.
I have to say that I really like both your illuminators and your stainless steel bench. Nice spread of objectives.
Do you have a Field Diaphragm or are you using Critical illumination?

Re: Thoughts on a new workbench

Just to suggest that a height adjustable chair should form part of the arrangement, as should the rock solid stability of the work bench. I am using a modern glass-top trestle office desk, supported by wooden planks to help with the weight and to bypass the original rubber supports. They increase vi...

Re: Oedogonium zygote

Very pretty micrographs! Thanks Did you find most of these swollen cells at the ends of the filaments, as in your first picture, or in the middle part ... Bit of both, though more were in the middle. I believe the alga end up breaking near the zygote to allow them to emerge. http://algalweb.net/oed...

I have since found out that an Adobe Elements plug-in, Elements+, that I have does focus stacking among other things, so I tried it on these images and I got acceptable results.
That is good news!

Aeolosoma sp.

Was not very successfully in in trying to film it. Only managed one reasonable photograph as it would not stop moving. Thought I would post it anyway as is does show how colourful they are. If anyone is wondering - no, it is not the head! http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag171/mapologo/worm_zpsmy...

Not the greatest picture, but I think you can get the jist of it.
I think that is a very good photograph - it clearly shows the type of element!

So how much had you been quoted to make the price of the bulb an issue?

May not be a bad idea to work down to 6µm as opposed to starting there. Probably worth a try.

Very nice - where did you find him? Old sample jar from Zuata reservoir. I tend to keep samples for a while, topping them up occasionally - I find one misses things the first time and also new things tend to appear. http://www.myfishmaps.com/intl-fishing-maps/Venezuela/fishing-Water_Locations/Reser...

That is a beautiful image. Sorry I can't help with the ID
(for some reason I could not access the "panorama" stitching function in my Adobe Elements editing program).
Some programs require as much a 60% overlap to work.

How good do they have to be though? As good as you can make them. Can't ask for more. Think of them as a teaching aid. Keep it simple and walk the reader through. Don't rush to publish. These things benefit from being put in a draw for a couple of days or so - you will see it with fresh eyes next t...

If I am right, the 0.9 flip-top is optically better corrected than the phase condenser (at least this is the case with my Nikon condensers: the 0.9 flip-top is an achromat, whereas the phase condenser is probably an Abbe). You can tell which is better corrected for chromatic aberrations by comparin...

Now in front. One of the many things I have had to get used to.
Put the Phase condenser in storage for now while I try the fliptop 0.9 Abbe condenser.
Not the only thing I changed yesterday so still in the hunt for answers.
