Very nice job indeed Sphaerotilus. As to the fibres, I have to admit the one with the blue appearance looks synthetic, but maybe not. The other, as you say, may be fungal.

Welcome to the forum Jared. I'm sure your expertise will be in demand from time to time. It would be interesting to see some pics of your vintage microscopes in the "My Microscope" forum if that's possible.

This sounds dumb, even to me, but the description of the residue sound a lot like something "Goo Gone Goo and Adhesive Remover" might deal with. Known ingredients include: PPG-3 METHYL ETHER. Some Concern: developmental/endocrine/reproductive effects. ... KEROSENE (PETROLEUM), HYDROTREATED. Moderate...

Hi farnsy Oddly enough I printed something quite similar a while ago, because I have all the same questions regarding cover slip cleaning and storage as you do, and am still short of answers :( The one I printed differs in that It holds the slides rotated 45 degrees, and of course the really major d...

Thank you for the response re: differentiation of safranin O. That's an impressive array of sections you've produced and the close-ups look really good. Re: Slide Making with 61°C Wax
Thank you for the clarification mrsonchus. I didn't realize you were not using Johansen's formula for the safranin O. I'm wondering if you have found the addition of the formalin, as mordant, changes the response of the stain during differentiation relative to your normal formulation?

Re: The Foot of the Fly.
Ah, thank you Tony. Much clearer view of the grooves this time. So the grooves are clearly longitudinal with, it appears in some cases, a slight spiral twist. It would be interesting to see a X-sectional view of such a seta at higher magnification. Might be quite a trick to prepare though! Alternati...

Re: The Foot of the Fly.
Hi Tony Yes, I see the grooves on the larger setae as you point out, and will take your word for their validity. In the stacked image I found it hard to decide whether I was looking at something really on the setae, or at structures "shining through" from from the various structures behind as a cons...

Re: The Foot of the Fly.
Excellent! Very informative image - thanks.
I'm assuming this is focus stacked, given the depth of field? There appear to be a few focus stacking type "artifacts" which also suggest this, although I may just be seeing angels on the heads of pins (or the hairs of flies!).

Welcome to the forum GraemeP. If you're in Reading UK, and are not already aware of it, Reading has an active microscopy group - the Reading Microscopical Society. You may want to check it out? If you're in Reading Pennsylvania that may not be of much help

Wow indeed! Thanks for that. Always loved the painting, have the Tracy Chevalier book, seen the movie, and now this. What would Vermeer think?
