Mr. HoKu,

That is a first class site. Very impressive. Knowing the history of the microscope is most fascinating. Thank you for sharing.

Re: Thoughts on a new workbench

CE, Your bench looks like mine except made of steel tubing rather than 2X4s. I have a formica work surface that is nice for the occasional spill. One thing I would change is the shelves on the back of the bench. Mine are hard to reach with a large scope on the bench. My g2 bench will be U-shaped and...

I found the bulb, but I need a few more exact dimensions, overall length, glass diameter. You can PM if you want me to continue.

Re: Thoughts on a new workbench

The nice thing about building your bench is that you can have anything you want. I've built a couple over the years using 2 X 4 framing for the legs and braces and 3/4" plywood finished with formica for the top. They are still in use every day nearly forty years later.

Re: Veterinary nurse for 20 years--California

The filament of this bulb is what I call a "spider web" (this is by no means an official designation). Nothing more that the small tungsten wire held up by three prongs. It is a simple bulb for a simple microscope. It takes a pretty good frosted diffuser to minimize the effect of the filament. One t...

I really save a lot of key strokes by waiting a while to contribute to a thread. I can simply agree or disagree with everyone else. Re: Veterinary nurse for 20 years--California

I may have a couple of these that are used and can get you a new one, but I don't know the cost, yet. If it is a used bulb you can have it for postage. When you are replacing a microscope bulb you should always get the recommend bulb. The reasons given above are all good and departures from the spec...

Good morning, I believe mintaka and gekko are correct in their suggestions that the spirogyra is a single cell existing as a filament. More than that, I would like to than gekko for his photos and everyone else for the interesting discussion. It has motivated me to do some more reading to try to sor...

Re: Naturalist's Microscope

Thanks for the comments, mintaka and gekko. This microscope is so simple and reliable that it is very easy to mount a specimen and pass the microscope around. I purchased the scope twenty years, or so, ago for an undisclosed amount. I will admit that one of the motivating thoughts at the time was, "...

Naturalist's Microscope

Hello all, I've had this microscope in my collection for many years. It's commonly called a Naturalist's Microscope, a Botanical Microscope, or a Flea Glass. It is a small single, or double lens instrument where the lens is mounted in a brass ring which is, in turn, mounted on a hinged arm attached ...

One of the best things about this forum is that it gets me to do research, or at least reading and pondering. I don't know what the cell is, but I would not vote (maybe naively) for closterium. Maybe it is a diatom.

Re: Seeking Learned Opinions...

Thanks to all,

In answer to a couple of questions, Peter, I have the aluminum and the ability to work with it much more so than steel.

Probably the best thing to do is to try it. I have the material and can find some time. It may be a good project to report on.

Re: Seeking Learned Opinions...

Thanks,

I don't know how to link, but the post is by Seb28 and it is toward the end of the Brunel Rocking microtome thread.

It appears that the bar is steel and I wondered whether aluminum would do as well or if I am missing something.

Seeking Learned Opinions...

I've been following the threads about microtomes and am now coming down with a mild case of motivation. I have little knowledge of microtomes and although I have four of five, of varying designs, none of them have a blade. I've looked on line to some degree and find nothing I can understand. The pho...

OK, now I understand. There is no mirror in this system, but the lamp is centerable. If there are no diffusers in the light path you should be able to see an image of the filament. When you have an image of the filament all you can do is center it. A little experimenting with the centering screws wi...

Re: Good but affordable microscope brand?

Would you go to a low-end Zeiss or a mid-range Motic? My experience leads me to the low-end Zeiss. There is just no similarity between precision machined stainless steel and brass components and injection molded plastic. Unfortunately, many who are shopping for the first microscope do not have the ...

Hello Sunrune,

There is lots of excellent advice in the replies above mine and I agree, for what it's worth, with most, if not all of it. So, here's mine. Get the biggest, baddest microscope your budget will handle, learn to use it and then use it for many X many years to come.
