Re: Zeiss Standard gets a new home
So, that's all running off the computer chassis? :) Yes, it is a common knowledge conversion of a computer PS to a psuedo bench power supply. (Although half the youtubers. etc get it wrong!) To be clear, the only component that is mandatory, in addition to a computer power supply, is the resistor y...

I was also fortunate to have a Gilbert microscope and also a chemistry set in my youth. (Although, like my youth, I didn't do much with them.)

That is handled; I finally build the 12 volt power supply although I am not happy with the enclosures and will be redoing them.Charles wrote:you are still getting a lot of 'yellow' in your pictures and may need to fix your lighting.

I am less help than CE.
For what it is worth, I believe 5mp is plenty and would not worry about having more. (Unless you plan a wall sized poster.)

It sold for $101. Like the Zeiss that I looked at (It too sold for a bit over $100 too at a SWAP auction), the condenser was worth more than the sales price.apochronaut wrote: That L.W.D. phase condenser , alone, is a steal for the money.

There seems little interest in this AO. Is it not a good scope? (The high bidder has won two of the scopes I have bid on!)

I would encourage curious members to give that preparation a try. It is pretty cheap and effective. Now that Fan has finished his analysis if anyone wants some, send me a PM and I will send it. There is no way I would ever use the pound that I have so you folks might as well help put it to good use...

That is great news Fan! Thank you for testing. I believe you will find that the bubbles dissipate if you let the solution set undisturbed. As far as the mix, I will be using 1% or less. Didn't you find 2% to be too thick? Here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QQ7LOA?psc=1&redirect=t...

A friend of mine picked up this B&L at Goodwill for $2.99!
It operates like a stereozoom but with a compound microscope range of magnification!
(I was disappointed to see they aren't worth much on Ebay though.)

I have read of professionals that clean their objectives only annually. Amateurs over clean, clean improperly and/or often damage optics.

I would have called it clear before you mentioned a normally yellow effect with starch. :-) I am having no luck with mixing the powder and water. Tried it 2 ways; just dumped the water on top of the powder as with a white sauce and slowly introduced the powder to the liquid as with a roux. Both ways...

Amazon review of methyl cellulose powder: Quote a 1% solution makes a thickish liquid like light cream and is a good liquid paste especially for paper. A 2% solution pours somewhat like honey but is the best for mixing with paint or pigments. Try a little at a time. I fill a squirt bottle with an e...

Glad you started this thread charlie g. I didn't realize so little methyl cellulose was needed! Since I have a pound in powder form, I will send a bit in an envelope if anyone needs some. This is bookbinding quality btw. (I think that is no problem. I would fear sending it to the White House though....

We may have been looking at the same one. There was one some time ago without objectives , which went even lower. I did not have any Bausch & Lomb apochromats at the time , so passed but even without trying I ended up with a bunch of B & L apochromats, eventually. The DDE is a bit of a mystery to m...
