Re: Greetings from Brisbane (Australia).
Welcome. There are a small number of mineralogical enthusiasts on the forum. I do a good deal of it myself.

Re: a growing seed
I do lots of plants. I've never been bored with it. There's so much I don't understand. You put a seeding in the ground. It begins to grow, but directly under it is a large stone. The roots will grow down to about two inches from the stone, then turn sideways to avoid it. How did it know the stone w...

Re: New Toy 2!
Depending upon the voltage required. You have true control at a max of 3.7 volts and 3 watts. But at 7 volts and 5 watts, the light is dimly on as soon as you turn it on. So I wouldn't say that at 5 watts you have total control but there is no flicker unless voltage is set too high, over- driving th...

Thought from such things has been debated for some time with no real solution. Some regard reaction to stimuli as thought. Others certainly don't. So, here we go!

Re: oblique illumination
Agreed. Not cost effective to continue when easier ways to obtain oblique lighting were developed. But the condenser seems to have adjustment to control the degree of obliqueness or to change the light path. The only way I can do that is with two filters, one being able to be rotated on the C axis. ...

I use pvms from Amazon, a power block and leds.. it comes out very stable and I have no problems. And you are right Phil. 20 watt halogen is usually insufficient for all the different filters we put in the light path.

Re: New Toy 2!
I converted my B660 from halogen to 5 watt led yesterday and am well pleased. It runs on 7.0 volts dc. I just don't like the yellow from halogen when you reduce intensity of illumination. But that's just me. I also use Pepsodent Toothpaste cause you'll wonder where the yellow went.

Re: New Toy 2!
Good image Louise . Looks like it has a slider on the photo tube which can be a good thing. Since it is infinite, I could make adaptors for 30mm eyepieces without affecting magnification. Thanks for the post. I'll keep watching to decide whether or not to buy one

Use a ten x, 23mm eyepiece inside the tube and expand it to put the 30x in the end of the outer sliding tube.

Re: WTB/ barrow 30mm Centering telescope lens
I made a sliding tube for this using an empty paper towel role and a good amount of scotcth tape. I admit it wasnt pretty but It actually worked quite well and was focusable.

I must say your collection is quite impressive. It's obvious that you have been gathering them for some time. Such designs were wonders in their time, and represent steps in the evolution of optics. I know little about these objectives but I want to thank you for sharing. Some one here with vastly m...

Re: Will an infinity scope minus its tube lens work with 160mm optics
Mt finite objectives will work with my infinite scopes at higher magnifications above 10x. Quality of image suffers a bit. But my infinite objectives will not focus in my finite scopes at all.

Re: keeping specimens alive
Add a few drop of milk and some cooked grains of rice to the water. Put the vessel containing specimens in a window sill, but not in full sun. They need light to prosper. A few living plants and mud from the place you got the specimens will also help. You will find microbes living in the mud and the...

Re: Erecting bino heads
Of course it's possible. But there may be some trade offs involved. There may be a reduction of perceived light intensity at the eyepiece. Magnification may be increased due to extra light path length. But it should be possible to do in an experimental environment simply by adding an additional lens...
