Re: Sections

Right members to try and bring you up to date. Starting from the top of photos is the first 5. 1. Section of Fig tree mounted by Arthur C. Cole. (and written in the book of Microscopical Mounts and Mounters by Brian Bracegirdle) is the following about A.C.Cole; Arthur C Cole (1821-1900) is mentioned...

Re: Phase Contrast at Virginia Beach

That's what I call different and good, making one think to figure out what the genus and species might be a really good and lateral thinking group of diatoms. I am a bit too sleepy to try and find the species of these diatoms. I really envy you guys being able to pass specimens to each other for mou...

Re: Rhopalodian Diatom Images

Kurt, I must commend you on an absolute fantastic set of prints of diatoms and the last one which appears to be stacked I think could be Orthoseira dendrophila or a species of Melosira. I can not be sure of either species. The whole set of photos are a credit to your commitment to producing good cle...

The third and final diatom is I think Triceratium antediluvianum (Ehrenberg) Grunow. A real beauty if ever there was one.

Re: Pleurosigma Piramid (caution 1.5 Mb)

Hi 75 that is a great idea to produce a set of photos where a lot of information can be gained from the raw material. With these photos we can study the chloroplasts as they would appear in the interphase cell. A lot more can be obtained from such mounts. Thank you for a new way of looking at diatom...

Re: Rhopalodia in Darkfield

I will try and name the diatoms in question, these might be wrong but I am reasonably sure that what I put down is correct. Photo 1. Could be Pinnularia nodosa but with all these photos it does not show the striae as in true form. Photo2. As above. Photo 3. Rhapalodia gibba. Photo 4. Do not know. Ph...

Re: Rhopalodia in Darkfield

Hi Charles, yes the genus of the diatoms have been given but not the species. The species of the diatoms will give a precise indication of the diatom, and not just the genus.

Re: Rhopalodia in Darkfield

Great photos Rod but what about naming the individual diatoms for everyone to know what they are looking at, its also an education process. Its time consuming I know but it helps others who would like to know the name of the diatoms they are looking at. Just a thought! (I know keep my thoughts to my...

Re: Help ID this small bi-flagella

Hi Kit, your small bi-flagella is...................... Litonotus Cygnus which is a very large and elegant member of the genus (sometimes spelt Lionotus ). The ingestion region is extended giving the appearance of a long neck.SO there it is in all its glory. Hope that helps.

Re: Two more brackish water diatoms - probably a Pleurosigma and a Gyrosigma [?]

This diatom Gyrosigma is being attacked and eaten by Vampyrella the cyst lays to the side of the diatom whilst the amoeboid stage of the cyst gets to work. Oh well back to the location of finding the diatoms for a better sample. Its good to see what happens when the underwater life comes to life and...

Now I am going to think of another good question regarding diatoms which hopefully will turn in t...
