Re: Wanted: Olympus BH2 DIC
Thank you for your detailed reply. I noticed that your DIY DIC prism is still missing 20x. Is there any problem? Sincere wowjl I am getting really good DIC at 20x now with one of my DIY prisms and my Olympus short-barrel planapo 20x 0.65. Dark and even background. No images to show, unfortunately. ...

Re: Wanted: Olympus BH2 DIC
Yeah, there's definitely enough tolerance in DIC to be worth trying mismatched systems. It's also worth remembering that even the original BH-2 system was only designed for Splan Achromats, so people (like Charles Krebs) using it with Splan Apo's are actually using a mismatched system anyway, which ...

Re: Wanted: Olympus BH2 DIC
No. It's for the Vanox AH. It won't fit the condenser holder on the BH2, and, since it doesn't have the LB sticker, it will most likely have three prisms designed for short-barrel objectives and AH intermediate tube.

Here's a LB version for the Vanox AH: https://www.ebay.com/itm/224661096841 Actually, I just realized that it says that it only has 10,40 and 100x prisms, just like the original short-barrel version. Now that I think of it, I think that you've shared that info with me before, PeteM. Then I guess tha...

Re: Nikon Microphot FXA
Great Post, Pete. I was really tempted by one of these a couple of years ago. Came with a full set of PlanApo's, for $999. Of course, shipping it across the Atlantic made it too much of a hassle. Being the flagship model, I'm thinking that a greater proportion of these were sold with high-end optics...

That's quite an attractive set of features. The Zeiss Plan Neofluar 63x 1.2 W Korr is pretty much the only one thing that comes to mind, but it doesn't have an iris: https://gimitec.com/epn/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/zeiss-microscope-plan-neofluar-63x-1-2-w-korr-160-0-12-0-22-water-objective.jpg?v=1...

Re: Pond life UV autofluorescence with Optolong LP-DAPI cube
Impressive start ! I like the DIY cube ; I assume that some artefacts in the photos originate from the illumination train upstream of the cube. Because the choice of filters is OK (for a fluorophore excited by UV). Especially the plant images appear to be non-uniform illumination as you hinted. Ind...

Pond life UV autofluorescence with Optolong LP-DAPI cube
A couple of months ago, I was sent a LP-DAPI filter cube from Optolong. In return I promised to share the results online. I thought it was a good excuse to force me to finish my DIY fluoresence build, and actually try to take some pretty pictures. It turned out to be a little tricky to fit the filte...

Re: Frankenstar IV
It depends a little on whether you want to use as much of the LED output as possible for excitation, or if you want to filter out the visible light and focus on wavelengths shorter than 400nm. If you do autofluorescence, shorter wavelengths are definitely better, and a 365nm LED would be much better...

They also are required to pick the image up 18mm down the tube, which is a focal distance unique to leitz. I've always been a bit confused by the many different varieties of Leitz eyepieces. I've built a foot switch to trigger my camera. This is especially nice when shooting pond critters as it allows you to focus with one hand and move the stage with the other.

Re: AmScope or Radical microscope for mycology beginner?
While I agree that mycology is one area where you really need a high NA oil objective, I don't think it's extremely demanding per se. Phase is convenient, but if you are okay with some basic staining, then pretty much any microscope with a 100x 1.25 oil objective and an abbe condenser should work we...

This is what I've done with my AH-NC NIC/phase contrast condenser for my Vanox AH. https://i.imgur.com/AmVg4LG.jpg I've replaced the phase rings with some Nikon Optiphot epi-DIC prisms. Through trial and error, it has allowed me to expand the range of objectives I can get good DIC with somewhat. As ...

That place seems like an elegant place to put filters if you are a producer that wants to make nice, ready made filter inserts. Wonderful appearing scope - and the first Apophot I've seen. Thanks for posting it. It looks as if there is room to move the stage down and use 45mm parfocal objectives as well? Magnificent microscope! Definitely a close cousin - or perhaps nemesis! - of my Olympus Vanox AH. The short-barrel apochromats from this era can be quite affordable and are definitely worth chasing down. My Vanox also came with simple plan achromats that I didn't like, but I have since tracked down ...
