Re: thinking out loud here - moral thoughts
One way to look at it if you return them, you could kill more trudging to the water and back to release them, than are in the test tube. One thing you can do is put them in a jar, add some chlorine-free water to top it up. Add a few decaying leaves, and a few grains or rice and very now and again, a...

Much Stuff For Sale - Everything Must Go!
Over the past seven or eight years, I have been an avid microscopy hobbyist. My interests have been primarily focused on Olympus scopes, especially the BH-2 line. I have devoted a great deal of time to collecting (some would say hoarding) and learning to repair and restore these microscopes. This ho...

Darkfield is inherently lower resolution than brightfield, and also is not a faithful representation of the specimen image, due to the loss of the zero-order light in the fourier-reconstructed (via interference) final image. Carl I should have been more clear in what I was trying to say. True, the ...

There is a seller on eBay selling a nice system that works with the standard BH2-CD abbe condenser. Check it out.

Re: Looking for parts for Microstar IV
Yes, heat resistance would be the problem with 3D printing. Maybe some of the uv curable resins would be up to the task, but I don't know. Now that I know that I'm not likely to find exact replacement, I may pull the bottom back off and have anoth look. I may just be able to cement a larger disk on ...

Re: Looking for parts for Microstar IV
wporter, Yes, that is exactly the part! The plastic gets well blasted with heat from the 20W lamp. The carrier was broken in half, so I concur it's a fragile part. I have it epoxied back together with JB Weld, so it might work. But I don't have the filter either. Please let me know if you are able t...

Re: Looking for parts for Microstar IV
Apochronaut, Right between the 7388 Esb lamp and the diffuser in the lamp inlet optics, there is a filter holder that swings in and out, as controlled by the "blue" knob on the front. The blue filter is missing , and the plastic holder is broken. There is also a neutral density filter, after the inl...

Re: Anyone see their microscope 'in the movies'?
In "The Last Man On Earth", Vincent price is a researcher, using a 6-inch toy microscope at home. It's funny to watch him hunch down and peer into the little toy. As the last man on earth, will full run of the town by daylight, he could certainly find a real one. I'm just saying.

Hi all, I would expect to encounter really vintage stands as set props in movie scenes evoking a lone scientist in the laboratory, 19th century plot times. But I just encountered my Nikon-Labophot Pol stand in a recent "B" movie with major film stars! There my stand 'acts scientific' as the main se...

Re: Question on Olympus BH-2
Sorry, I was too vague. I meant to say there are coarse-focus tension rings on some scopes, like Nikon Labophot 2, which you can unlock. But twisting coarse focus knobs against each other, on some scopes, such as a Nikon inspection scope, will damage focus mechanisms beyond repair. Sorry to resurre...

Lilly, just make sure you don't ever get oil on any of the other objectives. They can be ruined by the oil.

The extreme heat these things see in operation greatly accelerates their oxidation. I think something like Dow DC4 could work here, but I'm not sure what it's upper temperature rating is.
