Re: Olympus CH-2

This post, about 10 lines up from the bottom "2.66 stops"
So it was 100W halogen but 2.66 stops better than a 3W 365nm LED.
So all you'd need is a short pass filter over the halogen bulb.

Re: Olympus CH-2

The UV danger is really hard to get a handle on. I suspect we worry where we needn't, but that's the right way. Certainly the shorter UV is worse. Recently learned that a 60W (?) light bulb puts out more UV at 365nm than a 3W nichia 365nm LED. Surprising. I also have tested my spectacles. They're "r...

Looks good. I have one or two - or is it four, of those all different. They do get a bit hot, don't they?!

Is the disc we can see in there something you made up? And have you reused the lamp dimming part?

Fascinating comparison, Apoc, thanks. I was already looking at an objective, and the encouraging results from some of the old ones in your comparison made me buy it. Ebay 273680123059, an old (30's?) Re: Are cheap 100x objectives any good?

Thanks all. My impression is that a couple would be OK, if set up by the teacher and the students came to the microscope, only allowed to use fine focus, or something like that. They have to share microscopes as it is. (When I first turned up there were three out of action, marked as "Dangerous?". I...

Well, the kids aren't young, teacher's in control. An "A" level biology teacher asked me to see what's around and any opinions. Schools are normally limited to official sources and inflated prices. I got them a couple of haemocytometers for a tiny fraction of the regular supplier's price. I don't kn...

Re: Are cheap 100x objectives any good?

Thanks Eddie. Shipping to China would mean it wouldn't be worth sending back.
Maybe a cheap Lomo or something would be a better bet, but the school folk might decide they want more.
I have an old type Olympus (black knurled ring) but that definitely needs eyepiece correction.

Are cheap 100x objectives any good?

Has anyone tried the <$20 objectives from China at this magnification? Some are as low as £12. "My" secondary school doesn't have any objectives over 40x/0.65, which isn't enough to look at chromosomes etc. There are 60x /0.85s, but I think they'd be better off going to 100/ 1.25 oil. Their microsco...

Viktor's looks good. :)

I have one with a grid like this but 0.01mm centrally. Models come and go.
This is an eyepiece graticule, but you can tack them to a slide for stage use. (Would probably need to be upside down).

Re: Picture magnification question?

+1 for a stage micrometer - or two. If you get one which has a square grid pattern on it, it'll tell you quite a bit about how your optics are doing, sharpness wise, because you can compare across the field. You won't get one with the desirable 0.01mm gradations with a grid, I expect, but they're mu...

I have A manual for the Optiphot pol. I can't remember where it came from. If you can't find one online I can upload i...

I stand corrected it does show objectives  . No description, which I looked for. Mine also has two, with place for a third. I was told and have read that some objectives dismantle and the front end can be used, but I haven't found one yet. It doesn't look as though it ever had a third. It's so...

Abednego - thanks , there's some desirable stuff in there! Wim, thanks also. I have gripped and applied quite a lot of torque to the upper part of a regular trinoc - it doesn't want to unscrew. EBay item - an "oops"?

A Macarthur microscope just sold, where the bids went up in fairly normal steps, until - it looks like - two people decided they'd put in a killer bid to stop the other guy. I was watching with interest because I have one. They are nice - but the highest was I thought, about £500 so far. Check the b...

Re: Stacking focus consistency

Coincidentally I'm just having bother with an Olympus focus knob which IS calibrated, but only by means of raised numbers and bars, so it's black on black. I tried painting it, but it's not pretty. So I'm printing a circle with 100, or 200 marks round it, sized to stick on one or other knob. If you ...

Yes they're completely different illuminators. Mercury burners (arc) is only used for fluorescence, really. I have 2 of those too, waiting. A fellow on that other forum explained that you can use tungsten or LEDs in place of a mercury burner, (or flash if you remove the UV filter, ) but the latter i...

I have two epi illuminators which seem compatible (not tried, Optiphot is in storage) one is the BD type (plastic thing) and the other has pol etc filters, is metal, and has a lamphouse.

Note that anything not quite in focus will probably give you false colours from longitudinal chromatic aberrations. For Nikon and many others that would be purples. If there's something there, you probably want it in focus. My old computer used to take one minute per frame to stack. The current one ...

I agree, the problem-finding algorithms have to be adaptable!
