Re: Zeiss L + Epignost, year 1920

Hi, nice to see you have it up and running! I have an LG and the serial number is on the side of the focus block. In the linked Zeiss Jena document the serial number is at the same place. My Zeiss "Großes Forschungsmikroskop" was made in 1911. I would think that your Lu is quite a big step ahead in ...

Re: LOMO MƂP-1

A true Köhler setup projects the rectangular filament in the image plane, slightly defocussed. But many microscopes don't have a true Köhler setup, they use a frosted lens in the light path as the light source, it doesn't matter much how it is illuminated from behind as long as it is evenly illumina...

Congratulations, a very nice and fairly rare Instrument! It looks nearly like the much much more common LG but has the research instument type detatchable stage. It looks as if you also have the epi attatchment, this would be valuable as it is the main advantage over the LG and justifies to claim mo...

Re: How to clean old slides?

The hydrolysis resistance of slides glass is low. They attract humidity and the surface is damaged permanently. This can happen quite fast and hits mostly unused sildes closely packed in boxes, not prepared slides in boxes where they are held apart from each other. They can't be cleaned unfortunately.

The cast aluminium cooking pot is my paraffin oven. It sits on top of a heat plate, air is circulated to increase melting speed without the paraffin getting too hot. The bottom of the pot was a little hollow so I coated it with a layer of heat resistant silicone. Around the pot there is Armaflex for...

Re: LOMO Mbp-1

Of cause it is not only a question of power but also on how well it is used. If much of the light never reaches the specimen the light is wasted. In case a complete illuminator is available it makes sense to study how the light is transmitted and which size the filament has.

Re: How to store solutions for slide preparation

I have bought 53ml marmelade jars on ebay. The lid is metal and the jar glass and these are practically diffusion proof. But the seal is soft plastic and can of cause let a little diffusion out and can deteriorate depending on the type of solvents. Real chemical jars would be best but I prefer the t...

I like the Cree XM-L2 10W and XHP 50 12V 36W LEDs. For basic bright field work 1W would be enough. For high power dark field 10W LED power is barly acceptable. I power them with a lab power supply that can supply at least 2A. For extended use at high power it is better to use stronger power supply. W...

Re: How to store solutions for slide preparation

Hi, I use slide transport containers in a holder. The lids have openings which I plug with plugs 3D-printed from PETG. For de-waxing and the alcohol ladder down to water I put two slides at a time, same orientation, in these containers and close the lid. To control the fluid level I mark the right l...

Re: Plankton Net Reviews & Discussion

Hi Kurt, good idea to start this thread! A plancton gives access to the huge range of objects to be found in water. At the same time plancto nets are not something one can buy in every department store. For plancton collection I often use the sieve shown here. The stainless steel 50µ mesh can easily...

Re: LOMO Mbp-1

For long range focus stacking I would prefer a model with a concentric coarse/fine focus that moves the stage by means of a common roller guide, like a Zeiss Standard 14. On my Phomi 1 the coarse focus moves the stage but over a separate guide and I wouldn't see it as smooth enough to do photo stack...

Hi Kurt, nice photos! I like the third best as it shows the dynamic movement best. Plancton nets can be made from mesh used for silk screen printing. This can be bought quite cheaply from China or from a printing company in the area it one has a contact person there. I wasn't able to buy it in small...

Re: LOMO Mbp-1

Hi, this Lomo microscope actually is a precise copy of a Zeiss Jena LG microscope that was made from the mid or late 1930s on. I had one made in 1969 and I still have 2 LGs and the quality is similar which means very very good. After the war the russains dismantled the Zeiss factory carefully and to...

Krüss has a different market than Bresser, Amscope and other importers, they sell mainly to companies and institutions not so much to individuals. So they probably have a better quality control and service. The microscope model is probably quite usable, but I see no use in buying it when a GFL is av...

Re: Choosing a Handheld Microtome

Hi Danielle, making a hand microtome is no difficult machining operation but nevertheless it can be done wrong. For good sectioning one wants a certain friction between inner and outer cylinder, no sloppy fit. The micrometer spindle can handle this friction easily, but the blade won't be able to lif...

When making bacterial cultures it is important to keep out contamination with bacteria and fungi that have nothing to do with the sample. One way to keep the sterile culture plate sterile is by means of hard UV radiation (while using appropriate personal protection). If you do everything right you w...

Oblique illumination has not been offered ready made by the bigger manufacturers for many decades. But it is not difficult to setup oblique illumination yourself. It may be enough to hold a finger just below the condenser.

I think at 200$ you just won't get these developments that were made after WW2. You will get a cheaply made version of what was good enough before the war. Many active amateurs have a few spare microscopes in the cuboard which they will be willig to sell on. Perhaps you might post a "wanted" - threa...

The thickness is usually stated on the objectives. "-" unsually means "doesn't matter", this will be the case with your 4x. 0,17 will probably be written on your 40x and your cover slips should be about this, better a little thinner than thicker. The 100x is oil immersion and the cover slip thicknes...

Hi Woyjwjl, I would suggest to use the full uploadable size of 1024 pixels on the long side and upt to 500kB per photo. Most objects look better when presented without the black corners. In the second image the white balance is a little on the warm side. I would adjust brightness and contrast so tha...

You can upload photos up to 1024 pixels and 500kb Size directly to the forum. This way they are available for as long as the forum exists. The free image hosters die one after the other and the threads are useless without the images. I use Irfan view for quick image editing.
