Re: Parfocal diatom test

I will keep an eye out for any 1.4x tele-converters that i can throw inside the tube but for now i'm more than happy to crop in PP! I wouldn't mess with the tube itself at this point (except as JimT suggested... be sure there are no internal reflections or bright surfaces). It just appeared that yo...

Re: Parfocal diatom test

Karl, Yes it looks good. I'm pretty sure that as you work more with this set-up you will indeed see overall better image quality. (BTW...a 40/0.80 is exactly the kind of objective where you really want to avoid significant focus change between viewing eyepieces and camera. What objective is that?) I...

Re: Olympus BH-2 Question. Lamp intensity adjuster. Faulty?

I suspect lorez is correct, in that repair is needed. These folks were able to repair a faulty power supply on an Olympus BHS for me. It was under "guarantee" by the dealer, l so I don't know the cost involved (you might find it is too high to justify). Rocky Mountain Microscope Corporation   440 S ...

I know that there is a better way to go about throwing my camera on the AO20 using a combination of a specific focusing photo eyepiece and photo tube for the Trinoc head but I'm only here for another 2 weeks then work gets in the way, so this quick fix is just to keep me going until I'm back from m...

Re: Camera Vs Eyepiece

Would i be right in assuming we want the best of both worlds...parfocal and a matching FOV? Yes, if possible that should be the goal (or at least as close as it is reasonably possible). Both are pretty important in the overall scheme of things if you are trying to maximize picture quality. Being re...

Water boatman (Hemiptera: Corixidae) legs

The hind legs of the water boatman are very specialized, enabling it to be a powerful swimmer. They have a variety of special hairs that pivot and flatten against the leg on the forward stroke to provide minimum resistance, and then pivot and flare open forming a paddle with a large "surface area" o...

This discussion seems to have split has split into two different (but related) paths. Through the eyepiece everything is crisp and sharp but via the camera/tablet its clunkier...the cell wall lines look thicker, it doesn't reach the same pinoint detail that i get through the eyepiece. I'm adding another post today since the primary point of the Campanella post was the interesting cilia motion that was "frozen" by using electronic flash. Campanella umbellaria

These are sessile colonial peritrich ciliates. (Although I will often find them singly or in small groups or two or three). The "bell" is larger than the more commonly seen vorticella (about 200-260 μm long, 100 μm wide), and the oral cilia, which make 4-6 turns around the peristome are fascinating ...

Testate Amoeba

Kurt's recent foraminifera shots reminded me how fascinated I was with amoeboid protists that made "shells" or "tests". For a very long time an amoeba was, to me, a little blob of protoplasm that oozed about. When I began finding testate amoeba I was really amazed. Hard for me to fathom such wonderf...

Very nice work. With these subjects, at these magnifications, a very small stack (as small as 2 or 3 images) can make a big difference as well.

(BTW... I notice the same "spot" pattern on these images... might be time to carefully clean the sensor).

Re: Multicoatings and narrow angle scatter

I ask this because none of my current microscopes have multi-coated optics, and I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading to a scope with multi-coatings. I wouldn't jump to a new scope just for that reason. Depending on the design of the optics a good single coating can be quite effective. But as optic...

Great fun! Really nice images! In fact, if you even could make a "perfect" stack and get everything sharp you probably wouldn't want to. Notice how, especially in the second image the out-of-focus sections really add dimension and provide great "shape" clues. Sometimes you'll shoot a complete z-stac...

Re: Thousands of tiny bacteria?

Really need a better picture (or at least some information about the size).

But I'll take a wild stab and guess that they could possibly be a small ostracod (seed shrimp). They are often found in very large numbers and move about rapidly. Some small species are only 200 microns long.
