Re: Wanted: Zeiss Jamin-Lebedeff Components

There was a long discussion about that on the German microscopy forum, with the general consensus somewhat supporting your idea. Of course one would need to do a bit of tinkering with the objectives to match the beam splitter/combiner azimuth. JL kits are among the most rare of the Zeiss items, stra...

That's a great scope you got there Tim. And you have the version with metal coarse and fine focus control knobs plus the metalic field diaphragm, very nice :D Did you remove the camera control/power supply cables or it came like that? I tried the same Amscope adapter for Canon but it produced a lot ...

BTW, is there a good way to keep the oil out.
Put an absorbent collar on the objective so any oil that is dripping away from the front lens will get trapped by the collar.

C-eyepieces don't delaminate
Thats probably because there is nothing to delaminate there, no cemented doublets and such. Maybe Zeiss knew the cement they chose would lead to delamination eventually so they could sell new optics in the future, kind of like planned obsolescence.

Re: Where To Find Cyanobacteria

Put some soil in a jar with a bit of rain water. Add liquid plant fertilizer (may not be required depending on how nutritious the soil is). Close the jar and leave it somewhere warm with enough indirect sunlight.

Re: Diplophrys (Labyrinthulomycota)

Nicely documented thread Jochen, thanks for the link. Perhaps the species I found was in fact the one with colorless oil, and yes the filopodia did move slowly I'd say it looked as if they are used for crawling on the surface of the coverslip.

I was curious that the oil drop seen in this amoeba is not colored, as is commonly the case. You are correct, most often I find o...

Diplophrys (Labyrinthulomycota)

Image

Captured via the floating coverslip method. You can see two opposing tufts of anastomozing pseudopodia, a large oil droplet and a nucleus adjacent to it.
