Re: Unusual antique 'microscope'?

It is a very, very early vertometer or, what today, we call a lensometer. When you purchase new glasses, this is the device that finds the center of a lense blank as well as verifying the power of the blank. You could also use this to measure the strength of your glasses. Today, most modern lens/gla...

Re: Enamel Care

Several thoughts - as far as matching the enamel, utilize the paint matching computer at the paint center in the big box home improvement stores or an actual paint store. They need a flat sample area that's usually at least the size of your pinky fingernail. The problem is always matching the sheen ...

OY! The AO 569 Stereostar arrived but with frustration... I've almost universally begun to send a PM to Ebay sellers I buy microscope components from... hello again, Scarodactyl... here's a link to the manual for that particular refractometer, the Bausch and Lomb Abbe 3L...

I hope it gives you a more thorough explanation as to suiting your application:

Re: B & L Transplant Surgery - a Tale of Two Refractometers

Hello Scarodactyl! Most refractometers are intended to measure the angle of refraction of liquids, however these B&L units are more of a research instrument and can be used to measure index in even, uniform opaque materials. For use in my hobby microscopy lab, this is clearly over-kill. When I was i...

Hey MicroBob and apochronaut! I'm getting ready to experiment in the milling machine with a Bridgeport boring head. By setting up the right offset on the mill, it's possible to cut somewhere near 7" diameter circles. The idea is to replace the milling cutter with a carbide scribe point and then, aft...

Re: Still expanding my AO collection - with questions about parts...

Well, as a follow-up to my frustration with finding an actual AO glass stage plate, on Fleabay, it was cheaper to purchase this entire setup (see auction listing pic) just to get the stage plate than to keep hunting for the plate alone! I'm currently starting to search for a lens edger in order to s...

Hello again, Hobbyst46! I stand corrected and learn something new everyday! Re: Leitz SM Medical Microscope

MichaelG. posted an excellent reference. Personally, on the SM lux, I would recommend the FS tube for a couple of reasons: A). You already have the eyepiece/prism arrangement that allows you to directly view the image the camera is receiving**; and, B). The trinocular arrangement will remove any str...

I have one of these (refer to link) - As you can see, they're dirt cheap BUT, in this case, the shipping exceeds the cost of the surface plate!! Mine suffered a little damage to one of the corners because UPS ground freight was a little aggressive in handling it. I actually use mine for metrology re...

Re: B & L Transplant Surgery - a Tale of Two Refractometers

Hello Hobbyst46! THANK YOU for the compliment! These refractometers differ (in application) from what you describe in that they measure how an unknown sample influences the angle of refraction of white (visible) light entering the sample. An example would be the common bottle of Cargille immersion o...

I love that you posted this! In college, I worked for a microbiologist, James F. Wilson, who had a DeFonbrunne micro-injection apparatus mounted on a marble analytical balance table. Hello Kurt! Thank you for the good thoughts during our recent storm. Burlington is in the middle of the state and we, literally, pretty much dodged most of the storm. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... it was the epic of belief, it was the epic of incredulity... Actually, the third component of the stage monogram is G (as OP pointed out)... this stage was manufactured by Gebruder Marzhauser... "the brothers Marzhauser." Leitz and several German manufacturers did not make their own mechanical stages but farmed it out, in this case to "the Brothers Marzhauser...

That's amazing tape! I want to say I've seen it used as a shipping barrier in a remote control to prevent dry cell batteries from working - there was a little tab to be removed (by the consumer) between the battery and the terminal in the device.

Absolutely, MichaelG! My plans for this setup are to leave it completely intact as I got it - more or less a museum exhibit. This is a pic of the very crudely modified y axis knob of the Ortholux. It was done by such primitive means, they even used a spur gear as a spacer between the top of the Leitz knob and the stage interface.

Still expanding my AO collection - with questions about parts...

So here's the newest member of my AO clan - the Stereo Star 580. I must say, I LOVE THIS THING! It's built like a tank and has that wonderful camera mount. I've been wanting to add the camera mount to my Zeiss OPMI 6S and for what it typically costs on Fleabay for that adapter, I could buy about 5 o...
