Re: Images and comments
The advantage of using a condenser with a higher degree of colour correction is mostly seen off axis. If your goal is to capture the largest field as is possible, then the chromatism inherent with abbe condensers will cause background chromatism and some resolution loss, increasing with distance fr...

Re: Images and comments
Thanks guys - really good info and helpful replies. :) The idea regarding smaller coverslips sounds good - i am trying to wrap my head around the mathy bit - haha, i'm thinking it meant if there is less horizontal space, the creatures will be more likely to use vertical space leaving them near the t...

Re: A flatworm?
That's a big help, Bruce, thank you. :) I had hit a wall with Google, using vague descriptions - and the lack of eyespots was a confusing obstacle. Wasn't even sure it was a flatworm in the first place - so i can at least narrow things down quite a lot now. :) In the same water sample i found one ot...

A flatworm?
Having trouble identifying this myself - i first thought it was a large rotifer but immediately realised it lacked almost every feature - including the 'wheels' - then i though it might be a cilliate but it seems too large again, plus it has an extremely fluid shape and once the water on the slide s...

Hi guys, have been trying to improve my technique - mostly by practice - / trial & error - and still have a long way to go. [Apologies for the text between images, i wasn't sure where to post, but here seemed appropriate for the pics.] A few things i've noticed, the achro objectives suffer a lot of ...

Re: flickering problems, how do you deal with it?
Thank you for the replies. It sounds like you guys have a handle on the situation RE flickering, which is reassuring, knowing there are fixes for the problem. Some great info. thank u. I don't fully understand all of the tech stuff, but i can at least provide the model of 'scope and the illumination...

flickering problems, how do you deal with it?
Hi, Not found much online about this issue, so i wanted to ask you guys. What is the deal with the horrible flickering that seems to come from the light sources, especially when using live view or recording video? Really hard to get good footage because of it. :/ think it might be related to the fra...

A good point. never know what might pop up for a reasonable price.75RR wrote:That is good news.
If there is no urgency in recovering the money you might hold on to it for a bit and see if an SM-LUX-HL frame only, comes up for sale at a good price.

Re: Leitz sm lux bulb replacement?
Just as an update: seller was fantastic about the whole thing and refunded the full price, plus allowed me to keep the part. Can't ask any more than that. There are some dodgy geezers on ebay, but luckily this was not one of them. :) I guess i have a lampholder for sale then? i really can't find any...

Re: Leitz sm lux bulb replacement?
As ungainly as it may be, is the longer one able to work if pushed into place until the bulb is in the right place - that is with some of the holder sticking-out of the base rather than flush like the original? Just a thought, but maybe a stupid one.... John B. sorry John, missed this post. :P yeah...

Re: Leitz sm lux bulb replacement?
yeah, true. I would think the options 2 or 3 will be the better bet, judging by the way the holder fits in, to adapt to the new lighting will involve more than just electrical parts, the internal tube, and reflecting pieces, are in the way, or wrongly 'shaped' to accept the new lampholder anyhow. Th...

Re: Leitz sm lux bulb replacement?
I did not notice the difference in the length nor the electrical connection points. It does seem to exist, though not a straight swop. Found this on the Brunel site: http://www.usedmicroscopes.co.uk/leitz.html This is the relevant info: Have highlighted the relevant part. Won't this model be the SM...

Some microscope videos
Hi there, I started a youtube account for some of the video files i've recorded with a microscope. :) Nothing too adventurous or technical, but i had fun making them, and they show a couple of interesting critters that i like to observe from moss and rainwater samples. A rotifer and tardigrade as we...

Re: 2nd pol attempt, better colour (sugar alternative Xylitol)
Much better colours. Very nice. Thanks JimT and Clengman :) Yeah much more colour to this substance - that, or i've managed to make the crystals better, as i'm sure aspirin can look good when done right (which is what i used last time). Either way, i was glad to find something easier to work with. ...

Found my ideal substance :) This stuff is perfect for my needs - ie no special knowledge or techniques involved. Re: Leitz sm lux bulb replacement?
Thanks, very useful info - and a shock (no pun intended) to see the bulb life vanish at higher voltages! Fortunately there were two bulbs in the pack, and so i was able to replace the first one and experiment with the dial - i found that turning it about two thirds full, there was a big reduction in...

Re: What interesting things I can look for to observe under the microscope?
Mineral water contains chemicals. The composition of this water may be very different from that of surface water and the water we drink. I would not give the creatures mineral water but cooled boiled tap water. ah - ironically i had assumed that the mineral water would be the best option, so this i...

Re: Leitz sm lux bulb replacement?
If you exceed the voltage you will burn the bulb out very quickly. Can you check if you did? Would be a easy fix if so. :) I wouldn't know how to check that kind of thing to be honest. I know that the scope itself runs off a UK plug (240V/230V i think) rather than me having to convert it with a tra...

Ps. i'm guessing you think the bulb is not the issue?

Re: Leitz sm lux bulb replacement?
I'm still curious about that 20W holder that 75RR linked though - it looks like it might be a good upgrade, although it would be cool to find a UK based listing.
I at least know that the bulb holder would fit if i do find one in the uk - so i'll keep an eye out.
